What is a stakeholder?
DISCUSSION
For example, stakeholders can be people who hold an interest in a business: shareholders (they
don’t want to see the value of the company decrease because they would lose money).
In a legal sense - if there are changes in the law to a specific area – who are the people that are
going to advocate for and against the changes? Who are going to be impacted by the changes?
They are the stakeholders.
Surrogacy: medical profession, legal profession, surrogacy support groups, family court (they
grant the parentage rights for a child born through surrogacy), religious organisations
Patent: business community (patent owners, competitors), legal profession, courts,
Copyright: business community (copyright owners,
Cyberbullying: mental health services, schools, legal profession (prosecuting and defending
criminal instances of bullying i.e. using carriage service to menace/harass. Stalking, etc.)
Scaffold scenario:
Criminal law – Domestic violence laws need changing as a result of the 140 recommendations
made in the report by Dame Quentin Bryce ‘Not now, not ever: Putting an end to Domestic and
Family Violence’.
Who are the people or organisations that would either be for or against changes to the
domestic violence laws? Who is going to be impacted by the changes in the laws?
