Activity 3 – 30 minutes

This activity is aimed at a year 9 class studying AC Geography: Interconnections


Key Knowledge ACHGK068 - The effects of the production and consumption of
and Skills goods on places and environments throughout the world and including
a country from North-East Asia.
(Australian Curriculum, 2019)
Purpose The purpose of this activity is to investigate how widespread the issue
of plastic pollution is in the world, the effects and the impact on
marine life, human life and the environment and create solutions to
help fix the problem.
Resources  Devices (Laptops)
 Projector
 Arrange desks into two large circles (one inner, one outer) to suit
the activity
 Worksheets 1-4 for the class, plus extras
Method Group Crossover
Part 1: 10 minutes
 Class is split into pairs and one person sits on the inside of the
circle and the other sits on the outside of the circle. As this occurs,
ensure video is set up ready to play.
 One worksheet per pair is distributed (Appendix C)
 Youtube video on plastic pollution is played to the class.

Part 2: 15 minutes
 Students have 3 minutes to discuss within their pair the worksheet
picture and write down answers.
 Their answers are covered and the outer circle moves one place
clockwise and the inner circle move one place counter-clockwise.
 New pairs discuss the picture and write down their answers.
 Continue until students have completed all four pictures.

Part 3: 5 minutes
 Teacher leads a class discussion on each of the pictures and each
group presents one solution to the class.
 Teacher leads discussion on the cause and effect and solutions to
plastic pollution.
Diversification This activity allows students to engage with different sources of

As students move around the circle, they can work with other students
who are at different levels of understanding.
Higher Order The activity promotes higher order thinking as students work
Thinking collaboratively to understand the cause and effect of plastic pollution
and to create solutions.
Assessment of Students’ learning is assessed during the class discussion by

Feedback Feedback can be given immediately by the teacher in this situation.
Additionally, at the conclusion of class, the teacher can assess the
collaborative work done on the worksheets to inform future teaching.
