Message Identifiers (MIDs)

MIDs are the microprocessors used in heavy-duty vehicle
applications that transmit messages on the Serial Data Link
(SDL) and control the systems such as the engine, transmission,
and brakes. Assigned by the joint SAE/TMC Committee, the MID
number and description are used to identify the controller that is
sending a message (engine, brakes, etc.).

Parameter Identifiers (PIDs)

PIDs are the numbers and names used to identify the data in
the message (engine RPM, coolant temperature, etc.). The
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American
Trucking Association (ATA) have developed a standardized list
of PID descriptions, which are identified by a number and a
SAE PID description.

Subsystem Identifiers (SIDs)

SIDs are the numbers and names used to identify the part of the
controller that has a fault (engine timing actuator, brake relay
diagonal 1, etc.). The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
and the American Trucking Association (ATA) have developed a
standardized list of SID descriptions, which are identified by a
number and a SAE SID description.

Failure Mode Identifiers (FMIs)

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American
Trucking Association (ATA) have developed a standardized list of
failure mode identifiers, which are used along with SID and PID
fault code descriptions. In each case, the failure mode identifier is
identified by a number and the SAE description.
