ANALYZING A STORY

A. Plot
Plot is the arrangement of ideas and/or incidents that make up a story. There are at least
four basic elements of the plot; orientation or exposition, complications, climax and resolution.
While analyzing a story, the writer may use first person, second person or third person point of
view. By knowing this, we will be able to decide which character is the protagonist and which
are the antagonist. Then, we also have to find or determine his/her objectives or goal and his/her
obstacles (what made him could not reach the goal).

Here we will discuss a novel entitled Madame Doubtfire. Madame Doubtfire, known
as Alias Madame Doubtfire in the United States, is a 1987 English novel, written by Anne Fine
for teenage and young adult audiences. The novel centers around a family with divorced
parents.

Daniel and Miranda Hillliard are married but they don’t live together. Miranda is a
successful businesswoman, while Daniel is an out-of-work actor. In fact, they are at war, and
that war is hurting their three children, Lydia, Christopher, and Natalie. Daniel love his
children. But Miranda severely limits the amount of time for Daniel to spend with their three
children. Miranda has the house, Miranda has the children. And Daniel can’t do anythng about
it.

When Miranda decides to hire a housekeeper to care for her three children, her ex-
husband Daniel has a crazy plan. Daniel looks into the advertisement and he changed the
number from Miranda to his own number. Daniel disguises himself as a woman and gets the
job. He calls himself Madame Doubtfire.

The two eldest children immediately know who "Madame Doubtfire" is, but the
youngest and Miranda are fooled. Daniel uses his disguise to spend time with his children.
Miranda comments that the house has never been run better. They worry that their mother will
see through Daniel's masquerade.
1. Orientation or Exposition

And Daniel can’t do anything about
it. Their war can be seen in this part of scene.

“Daniel pretend to cut the throat”

2. Complications

The complications begins when Miranda decides to hire a housekeeper to care for her
three children and look after the house when she is at work. Her ex-husband Daniel has a crazy
plan. Daniel looks into the advertisement and he changed the number from Miranda to his own
number. Daniel sees this as the perfect opportunity to spend more time with his children so he
dresses himself like an old, nice and polite woman. Daniel disguises himself and gets the job.
He calls himself Madame Doubtfire.

“He pretended to make the word clearer. At the same time he quickly put a line through
Miranda’s telephone number and wrote his number instead”

At first, The children did not know. They also did not like Madame Doubtfire. After a
couple days, Lydia Curious about Madame Doubtfire. She thinks that Madame Doubtfire is
odd. His two eldest children, Lydia and Christopher immediately know who "Madame
Doubtfire" is, but the youngest and Miranda are fooled. They worry that their mother will see
through Daniel's masquerade.

“Madame Doubtfire sat down and looked out of the window with a smile on her face.
The two older children understood that Daniel and Madame Doubtfire were the same person.”

3. Climax

Miranda just back from her work, Madame Doubtfire offers her a cup of tea. They are
chatting together. Miranda tells Madame Doubtfire about her ex-husband, Daniel. Miranda tells
that her ex-husband is a terrible person. Then, Madame Doubtfire tells that she must forget her
bad memories with Daniel. But, Miranda said that it is not over yet.

One day, Miranda know that Madame Doubtfire is her ex-husband. Miranda looks so
mad and disappointed at Daniels

“ Miranda’s face was white and angry.”

4. Resolution
Then, Daniel went to his home feeling deeply unhappy. He putt all Madame Doubtfire’s
hats, coats, and skirts into a black plastick bag and left the bag outside the back door. Suddenly,
Miranda and their children came to his house. Miranda wants Daniel back, but not as a Madame
Doubtfire. Miranda wants Daniel becoming a gardeners so that Daniel will still see the children
after school. Then, Daniel accepted the job as a gardener. The war between Hilliards was over
at last.

“ Now listen Daniel. I don’t want you back as a house keeper. You did a good job but I don’t
want you in the house. But what about becoming the gardener. If you work in the afternoons,
you’ll still see the children after school”

B. Character and Their Characteristic

Before we begin to analyze the characters and their characteristics, let us decide who
the Character is. I have decided that the character is Daniel Hilliard, Miranda Hilliard, Lydia,
Christpoher, and Natalie.

1. Daniel Hilliard

Daniel is the father in the broken “family”. He is at the time a out-of-work actor and he live by him self
in a small flat. He is a naive and funny person who cares about hischildren. But he not seemed to be a
very strict to his children. He wants to se his children more often, which his former wife who has the
children care allows him to. He wants to see his children more often so when his former wife searching
for a nanny he gets an idea.

a. Sacrifice

According to www.vocabulary.com, A sacrifice is a loss or something you give up,

usually for the sake of a better cause. Daniel based on the scene wants to see his children more
often so that he disgust himself as a woman. He sacrifised to see his children more often even
he has to disgust himself as a woman.

b. Cunning

According to www.vocabulary.com, Cunning means clever, in the sense of trickery.

Based on the scene, when Miranda decides to hire a housekeeper to care for her three children,
Daniel has a crazy plan. Daniel looks into the advertisement and he changed the number from
Miranda to his own number. It shows that He is Cunning.

c. Talented

According to www.vocabulary.com , Talented is If you're really good at something.

Daniel is very talented at his act. That’s why his ex-husband and his children did not know that
Daniel and Madame Doubtfire were the sam person.

2. Miranda Hilliard
Miranda is Daniel’s former wife. Miranda is a successful businesswoman who earns a lot of money. On
the one hand, she loves her former husband, because he is a kind and funny man, but on the other
hand he is out-of-work man and he doesn’t do any work at home. She is a strict and a mother who
wants to have control. Because she works that much, she want to have a nanny who can see after the
children and keep it clean at home.

a. Hardworking

According to www.vocabulary.com, Hardworking is characterized by hard work and

perseverance. Based on the scene, Miranda decides to hire a housekeeper to care for her three
children because she is hardworker person. She cannot take care her children so that she hire a
housekeeper.

3.Lydia, Christopher and natalie

These are the children in the divorced family who wants that there father to live with them. They are
pulled between the parents, because both of the parents want to spend time with them. They gets
excited when they finds out who their nanny actually is and when they are with their nanny they gets
more time with their father. Natalie is the youngest of the children, Lydia and Christopher the oldest
one.

1. Lydia

A. Curious

According to www.vocabulary.com. Curious describes someone who is eager to find out answers and to
explore and learn. A curious student asks lots of questions. A curious little monkey, like the famous
Curious George from the children’s book series, may be so curious to know how a clock works that he
breaks it trying to get a closer look inside. Curious can also describe something unusual, like a house
that is painted a curious shade of purple. It can bee seen in the novel “Lydia feels that is something
behind mrs. Madame doubtfire”

2.Christopher

A. Care

To care is to feel concern, and care is attention given, tending, or upkeep. If you care about how your
garden grows, you will take care to water it often, remove weeds, and talk to your plants about the
weather. It can be proved when Daniel and Miranda relationship get better, it because Christopher
told her mum to not fight with his dad anymore and start to get along.

3. Natalie

A. Maudlin

You can use maudlin to describe something that brings tears to your eyes, or makes you feel very
emotional. Tearjerkers like "Forrest Gump" and "Titanic" can be described as maudlin. Maudlin was a
form of the name Mary Magdalene, a character from the Bible represented in paintings as a weeping
sinner asking forgiveness from Jesus. Maudlin is often paired with sentimental, or even schlocky, to
describe cry-fests, as in "I can't watch another second of that overly-sentimental, maudlin soap opera.
Turn that schlock off." It proved in the novel, when Daniel going a little bit physco, she cover up his
ears and started to cry.

C. Settings
In analyzing settings of a story, we need to find the location where the story takes place
and the time when the story happens. Therefore, this subject will be divided into two main
subject.

1. Place:

Miranda’s House

Miranda’s house is the place where Madame Doubtfire works as a Housekeeper.

2. Time:

Tuesday Afternoon

Tuesday Afternoon is a time when the children can spend their time with Daniel.

“I only came because it’s Tuesday afternoon.” Said Lydia.

“Because Tuesday afternoon is my time?” asked Daniel.

“That’s the agreement, isn’t it?” said Lydia

D. Message

Every story has a message to tell or to teach. A few entertain the readers or the
listeners, but the most teach us about something. The message here is about not
to rebel against parents, always love them. Then, always spends some quality time with
both parents even though they have been disvorce.

as consequence, parents should less angry to their child, But be gently and lovingly with
cheerful face, it will make the child more understand rather than scold them.
Child is need parents support, dont be so rude to them.
E. Summary
After analyzing the whole story of the book, we conclude that the story is teaching us
(especially parents who disvorce) to not fight or arguing in front of childrens. Because, it will
make them feel depressed and suffering. The story told us too, not all divorced parents have a
bad nature after a difficult time in their life . Even though they had parted, should not have less
respect for them, always show respect!
