FULL ONLINE CLASS (FOC)

Students are required to read these instructions carefully, before answering the following

questions.

1. There are three (3) categories of mechanical and electrical system in buildings, namely (i)
mechanical systems, (ii) electrical systems and (iii) building operation systems. State two (2)
typical subsystem for each category.

 Mechanical Systems

o Ventilation

o Plumbing

 Electrical Systems

o Electrical Power

o Lighting

 Building Operation Systems

o Transportation

o Automation

2. Discuss two (2) impacts of a mechanical and electrical system to the construction cost.

i. Taller building made more time to construct as complicated scheduling to

raise M&E material to high floors and cost more.

ii. Impacts on operating are energy consumption, routine maintenance, repairs,

replacements and utilities.
3. Name two (2) components of Integrated Building Management System (IBMS) for
commercial building.

i. Building automation system

ii. Fire detection and alarm system

4. Heat can be transferred from hot to cold condition in three (3) basic ways. Explain two (2)
methods of heat gains for a building.

i. Definition of convection is the transfer of heat by moving air. Example, warm

air rises and transfers heat to the ceiling

ii. Definition of radiation is the transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic

waves. Example, heat is transferred from roof to the ceiling.
