They were not Kohen i.e. priests the only ones allowed withing the Temple proper. Also
many may have been gentiles (not circumcised).
Kohen or cohen (or kohein; Hebrew : כֹּהֵןkohén, "priest", pl. כֲֹּהנִיםkohaním, "priests") is
the Hebrew word for "priest " used colloquially in reference to the Aaronic priesthood .
Levitical priests or kohanim are traditionally believed and halakhically required to be of
direct patrilineal descent from the biblical Aaron (also Aharon), brother of Moses.

I do not know. It looks to me like Solomon’s colonnade was within the temple complex (part
of the outer court) but not within the part of the temple where sacrifices were carried out.
1. If Solomon’s colonnade was within the outer court, then that’s the part of the
temple complex where I think women were allowed, so perhaps they felt that it was
right to be together as a church and not segregate.
2. The outer court was where Jesus had taught, so they were going back there.
