Introduction
Blended learning (or B-Learning) combines online with face-to-face learning. The goal of blended
learning is to provide the most efficient and effective instruction experience by combining different
teaching methods, such as collaboration software, Web-based courses, and knowledge management
practices. The teaching models and learning styles are based on transparent communication of all
areas involved
Some advantages of blended learning are: the cost-effectiveness of both the institution that provides
training to the student, the rapid updating of materials, new forms of student-teacher interaction,
accessibility to a post in secondary education, and flexibility in planning and scheduling of the course.
Some disadvantages are: access to
computers and Internet, ICT limited knowledge, study skills,
problems similar to those that might have access to a traditional educational institution.
Some authors talk about "hybrid learning" (nomenclature most common in North America) or "blended
learning". However, all of these concepts refer more broadly to integration (the "blending") of e-learning
tools and techniques.

Although the World Wide Web is often referred to as the Internet, the two are not the same thing. The Internet
is a huge network of networks that links computers together
all over the world using a range of wires and wireless technologies. The World Wide Web is the collection of linked pages that are accessed using the Internet and a web
browser.
English physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee is regarded as having invented the World Wide Web in 1989.
Since then he has continued the development of web standards
and other web related projects. The Worldwide Web was developed in Objective C programming language.

We use it every day, but how much do we really know about the internet?
freedigitalphotos.net
The Internet (or internet) is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users
worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by
a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-
linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support email.
The Internet has enabled and accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has
boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire
industries.
The Internet allows greater flexibility in working hours and location, especially with the spread of unmetered high-speed connections. It can be accessed
almost anywhere
by numerous means, including through mobile Internet devices. Mobile phones, datacards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers allow users to connect to the
Internet wirelessly. Within
the limitations imposed by small screens and other limited facilities of such pocket-sized devices, the services of the Internet, including email and
the web, may be available. Service providers may restrict the services offered and mobile data charges may be significantly higher than other access methods.

Background history
The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great
potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in
scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT first proposed a global network of computers in
1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to
head the work to develop it. Lawrence Roberts of MIT connected a Massachusetts computer with a
California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines. It showed the viability of wide area networking.
Roberts moved over to DARPA in 1966 and developed his plan for ARPANET. These visionaries and
ENG2_Unit 1.- The Internet 12/02/2019 Página 7 de 49
many more left unnamed here are the real founders of the Internet.
Originally the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency network), began as a military computer
network in 1969.
It consisted of four main computers, each one located at the University
of California at
Los Angeles, the university of California at Santa Barbara, the Stanford Research Institute, and the
University of Utah. Each computer served as a server on the network. Other government agencies and
universities created internal networks based on the ARPANET
model. By 1984, ARPANET had more
than 1,000 individual computers
linked as servers. Nowadays, more than 400 million hosts connect to
the
Internet.
Today, the Internet is composed of many local, regional, national and international networks. Even as the Internet grows, it remains a public,
cooperative and
independent network. No single person, company, institution or government owns the Internet.

It is often said that there is no administration, or management of the Internet. While this is generally true, there are several
well-known organizations that work together in a relatively well structured and organized environment to cooperatively take
part in the research, development, and management of the Internet
Nevertheless, it is not an easy issue to define. The internet is, as we have said before, a group of protocols by which
computers communicate, and innumerable servers and cables, most of which are in private hands. However, in terms of
influence, the overwhelming balance of power lies with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN), based in Marina Del Rey, California.
ICANN is a not-for-profit organisation that regulates online addresses, known as domain names,
and their suffixes, such
as ".com" and ".org". Since ICANN reports to the US government's Department of Commerce, the domain name process is
effectively overseen by the US government. China, Russia and Europe have
all expressed concern at this situation
because it means the US has leverage over the global coordination of the internet.
ICANN holds periodic public meetings rotated between continents for the purpose of encouraging global participation in its processes. Resolutions of the ICANN Board,
preliminary reports, and minutes of the meetings, are published on the ICANN website, sometimes in real time. However there are criticisms from ICANN constituencies
including the Noncommercial Users Constituency (NCUC) and the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) that there is not enough public disclosure and that too many
discussions and decisions take place out of sight of the public.

Adapated from: http://www.livinginternet.com/i/i.htm
Since the Internet is a global network of computers every computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address (which are basically like phone numbers or postal
addresses that identify servers.). This address is known as an IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol),
which is a number that individually identifies each computer or
device connected to the Internet. The IP address usually consists of four groups of numbers, each separated by a period. The number in each group must be from 0 - 255.
Generally, the first part of each IP address identifies the network and the last part identifies the specific computer.
For example, the IP address of http://www.apple.com is 17.149.160.10
IANA allocates and maintains these unique codes and numbering systems. Users are assigned IP addresses by internet service providers (ISPs). ISPs obtain allocations of
IP addresses from a local, regional, or national internet registry.
The whole network of programs and databases that cooperates to translate hostnames to IP addresses is called ‘DNS' (Domain Name System).
We could say that a
domain name is the text version of an IP address. In the same way as with an IP address, the parts of a domain name are separated by periods.
In the example above, the com portion of the domain name is called the top-level domain (TLD), which is the last part of the domain name. They usually identify the type of
organization associated with the domain.
Exercise
Read the paragraph below and fill in the gaps with these terms.
Top-level domains
Internet domain names are organized by their levels, with the higher levels on the right. For example, for the domain "www.amazon.com" the top-level domain is
"com", the second-level domain is "amazon.com", and the third-level domain is "www.amazon.com".
Originally, the top-level domain space was organized into three main groups: Countries, Categories, and Multiorganizations.
IANA today distinguishes the following groups of top-level domains:
internationalized country code top-level domains Country-code top-level domains in non-Latin character sets (e.g., Arabic or Chinese).
infrastructure top-level domain This group consists of one domain, the Address and Routing Parameter Area (ARPA).
Generic TLD
A generic TLD, gTLD, is a top-level domain that is used in particular by
a specific type of organization. These generic TLD's are three or more letters long, and
they're named to be a good fit to the organization. The following list is examples of current gTLD's.
for the air transport industry
for business use
for commercial organizations, but unrestricted
for post-secondary educational establishments
for governments and their agencies in the United States
for employment-related sites
for sites catering to mobile devices
for museums
originally for network infrastructures, now unrestricted
originally for organizations not clearly falling within the other gTLDs, now unrestricted
for travel agents, airlines, hoteliers, tourism bureaus, etc.

In the history of mankind, the Internet is the greatest development in the domain of communication industry. Similar to each and every invention, the Internet carries a
number of advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, the advantages of the Internet are so huge in number that they outperform the disadvantages quite easily.
The Internet provides many opportunities, and can be used for a variety of things. Some of the things that you can do via the Internet are:
E-mail: E-mail is an online correspondence system. With e-mail you can send and receive instant electronic messages, which works like writing letters. Your messages are
delivered instantly to people anywhere in the world, unlike traditional mail that takes a lot of time.
Access Information: The Internet is a virtual treasure trove of information. Any kind of information on any topic under the sun is available on the Internet. The ‘search
engines' on the Internet can help
you to find data on any subject that you need.
Social Networking
One cannot imagine an online life without Facebook or Twitter. Social networking has become so popular amongst youth that it might one day replace physical networking. It
has evolved as a great medium to connect
with millions of people with similar interests. Apart from finding long-lost friends, you can also look for a job, business
opportunities.
Downloading Software: This is one of the most happening and fun things to do via the Internet. You can download innumerable, games, music, videos, movies, and a host
of other entertainment software from the Internet, most of which are free.
But, of course, there are certain drawbacks and dangers relating to the use of Internet.

As we have mentioned before, the terms World Wide Web and Internet are not synonymous. The Internet and the Web are two separate but related things. The World Wide
Web is a service of the Internet.
The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3,commonly known as the Web),
is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. It is a
collection of text documents, images, videos, other multimedia and other resources, linked by hyperlinks and URLs, usually accessed by web browsers from web servers.
In short, the Web can be thought of as an application "running" on the Internet.
The Web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data. Web services, which use HTTP to allow applications to
communicate in order to exchange business logic, use the the Web to share information. As mentioned above, the Web also uses browsers, such as Internet Explorer or
Firefox, to access Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks.
Viewing a web page on the World Wide Web normally begins either by typing the URL of the page into a web browser or by following a hyperlink
to that page or
resource. The web browser then initiates a series of communication messages, behind the scenes, in order to fetch and display
it.
WWW prefix
Many domain names used for the World Wide Web begin with www because of the long-standing practice of naming Internet hosts (servers)
according to the services they
provide. The hostname for a web server is often www, in the same way that it may be ftp for an FTP server, and news or nntp for a USENET news server.
These host
names appear as subdomain names, as in www.example.com. The use of 'www' as a subdomain name is not required by any technical or policy standard and many web
sites do not use. When a user submits an incomplete domain name to a web browser in its address bar input field, some web browsers automatically try adding the prefix
"www" to the beginning of it and possibly ".com", ".org" and ".net" at the end, depending on what might be missing.
In English, www is usually read as double-u double-u double-u. Some users pronounce it dub-dub-dub, particularly in New Zealand.
The scheme specifier http:// or https:// at the start of a Web URI refers to Hypertext Transfer Protocol or HTTP Secure
respectively. Unlike www, which has no specific
purpose, these specify the communication protocol to be used for the request and response. The HTTP protocol is fundamental to the operation of the World Wide Web and
the added encryption layer in HTTPS is essential when confidential information such as passwords or banking information are to be exchanged over the public Internet.
Web browsers usually prepend http:// to addresses too, if omitted.
The Internet, not the Web, is also used for e-mail, which relies on SMTP, Usenet news groups, instant messaging and FTP. So the Web is just a
portion of the Internet, a
large one though, but the two terms are not synonymous and should not be confused.

Websites have many functions and can be used in various ways; a website can be a personal website, a commercial website, a government website or
a nonprofit
organization website. Websites can be the work of an individual, a business or other organization, and are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose. Any website
can contain a hyperlink to any other website, so the distinction between individual sites, as perceived by the user, can be blurred.
Websites are written in, or dynamically converted to, HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). Web pages can be viewed or otherwise accessed from a range of computer-
based and Internet-enabled devices of various sizes, including desktop computers, laptops, PDAs and cell phones.
A website is hosted on a computer system known as a web server, also called an HTTP server. These terms can also refer to the software that runs on these systems which
retrieves and delivers the web pages in response to requests from the website's users.
Content can be varied, and note that different categories of the web sites are not distinct and can overlap... sometimes to a large degree.

a. These are websites that are compatible and viewable on a number of hand held devices like PDAs, iPods and iPhones. These
websites are relatively new to the World Wide Web compared to the other types of websites listed and were created
because traditional
sites were becoming difficult to view on new mobile
technology due to their download times. To compensate for this, a new domain
Informational designation (.mobi), was created to help identify websites that are friendly to mobile devices. This new type of website can have the
same material as other sites on them, but contain narrower pages in width and take up much less bandwidth for decreased download
times. They
are extremely useful and are becoming more and more popular because they can reach larger audiences who do not have
the time or access to a regular computer.
b. As internet speeds have increased and more and more people are using broadband connections,
the importance of these types of
web sites has grown. They do exactly what their title says; they provide space for people to post files like photos or videos so other
Educational
people may view them, save them and sometimes buy them. Some good example of these websites are YouTube, Shutterfly, Flickr, and
Google's Picasa.
c. This type of websites is dedicated to the purpose of providing information. A major informational site is wikipedia.org,
the online
encyclopaedia. And it is unique, because it allows visitors to contribute and edit articles. They are the easiest sites to maintain.
All you
Business really have to do is make sure the information you have listed on your site is up to date and refresh the information every now and then
accordingly. They can also contain updated time tables, TV guides, reference material, sports data, etc. Most government, educational
and nonprofit institutions have an informational site.
d. They usually provide information about a certain individual or group (such as a family) that contains information or any content that the
individual wishes to include. Such a website is different from a Celebrity website, which can
be very expensive and run by a publicist or
agency. A lot of times individuals will create these websites in order to get information about
themselves out to other people.
E-commerce
They usually require little to no maintenance and are the easiest type of website to start. A lot of Internet service providers give you the
opportunity to create such a website by giving you free server space
that allows you to upload family photos and content. Usually, the
free space on the server is very limited and only allows you to do the bare minimum.
e. These are sites offering goods and services for online sale and enabling online transactions for such sales. Anyone with access to an
Internet connection and a means to pay for purchased goods or services can take part in it. There are millions of small and big
businesses who use these
websites to sell their products over the Internet. Popular uses of this
kind of websites include shopping,

investing and banking. Users can buy
just about any product or service on the Web.
A customer visits an online shop through an electronic storefront, which contains product descriptions and a shopping cart, which allows
the customer to collect purchases. When the sale has been completed, the
customer enters personal data and the method of payment.
f. They usually offer the use of various kinds of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education for
the purpose of formal and informal teaching and learning. Sometimes also referred to as E-learning, it is an inclusive terminology for all

forms of educational technology that electronically or technologically support learning and teaching, and may, depending on an emphasis
networking
on a particular aspect or component or delivery method, sometimes be termed technology-enhanced learning (TEL), computer-based
training (CBT), internet-based training (IBT), web-based training (WBT), virtual education, or digital educational collaboration.
g. They are like online diaries. They are informal websites consisting of time-stamped articles,
or posts, in a diary or journal format,
usually listed in reverse chronological order. Because they are so easy to create, manage and even earn from (there are also a lot of
profitable ones online) there are a lot of them now on
the web. And it's all thanks to the many free services and a strong enthusiasm by
Personal its ever growing community who keep maintaining and updating their web space regularly. They reflect the interests, opinions
and
personalities of the author and sometimes the visitors.
The contents of web site can vary widely. Business create them to communicate with employees, customers or sellers. Teacher create
them to
collaborate with other teachers and students.
i. They include content that promotes or sells products or services. Pratically every business has a Web site. Many of these companies
also allow people to buy their products or services online. With your online brochure or catalog, you can show anyone who looks for and

has been used for centuries; it is a successful method that has proven results. It is one of the oldest language teaching activities. It is perhaps for this
reason that it has been neglected recently, claiming that it is too uncommunicative, boring and old-fashioned.
Although dictation is a simple tool, it is still hard work for students because they need to concentrate on the mechanics of listening, understanding and writing in
English.

Look at the Dictation passages below. Some words are missing from the passage. Your job is to

Listen to Professor William Arnold, who is a lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Law, Newcastle Business School. He is going to
introduce today's seminar about ebay.
Lecturer: eBay Inc. (also known as ebay) is an American multinational internet consumer-to-consumer corporation, headquartered in San Jose, California. It was founded in
1995, and became a notable success right away. By early 2008, the company had expanded worldwide.
It is now a multi-billion dollar business with operations localized in over thirty countries. The company manages eBay.com, an online auction and shopping website in which
people and businesses buy and sell
a broad variety of goods and services worldwide. In addition to its auction-style sellings, the website has since expanded to include "Buy
It Now" standard shopping; shopping by UPC, ISBN, or other kind of SKU (viaHalf.com); online classified advertisements (via Kijiji or eBay Classifieds); online event ticket
trading (viaStubHub); online money transfers (via PayPal) and other services.
So, as you can see, eBay is an enormously successful company. In 2012, it had a turnover of $14.07 billion and 27,770 employees. It also counted hundreds of millions of
registered users ...
Student 1: Excuse me, Professor Arnold, but, in your opinion, what's the secret of eBay's success?
And to add another important reason, which may not be as obvious as the first one, I would point out the fact that eBay doesn't produce, sell or ship anything itself, it
provides the online marketplace for other people to do this. And this fact gives eBay an enormous financial power ...
Student 2: Why is that so important, I mean the idea that eBay does not produce, sell or send anything itself ...?
Lecturer:
This means that they can use the money they make very efficiently -Their capital isn't tied to things that need to be sold to make money, they haven't got shops or
warehouses all over the world- all these things mean extra expenses - do you understand what I mean?

Student 2: Yes, I see what you mean ...
Lecturer: Right, then ... Maybe, the main problem they have come across - economically speaking, of course - is that they arrived too late in a couple of key markets: Japan
and Hong Kong, where Yahoo's online marketplace was far ahead.
Alcohol (alcohol-related collectibles, including sealed containers, as well as some wine sales by licensed sellers are allowed, some sites such as ebay.com.au allow
licensed liquor sales)
Nazi paraphernalia
Used underwear
Forged, illegal, stolen, or confidential documents, which include passports, social security cards, drivers licences, etc.
Human parts and remains (with an exception for skeletons and skulls for scientific study, provided they are not Native American in origin)
Lecturer: And finally, I'd like to have a look at just how the company has expanded over the last years, as eBay is a huge, publicly visible market which has created a great
deal of interest
from economists, who have used it to analyze many aspects of buying and
selling behavior, auction formats, etc., and compare these with previous
theoretical and empirical findings ...
