5 Pipeline Route

5.1 Centreline Setting Out

Initial setting out will be done from the information provided and the centreline pegged out at 200
metre intervals, at crossing points, at field boundaries and intersection points. As a minimum, stakes
shall be visible from the adjacent stakes.
Marker pegs, at least 50 cm square and 750 cm long, will be painted red with pipeline route
intersection points (IP’s) clearly identified by red and white pegs.
IP’s shall be sequentially numbered and the following information recorded in field Survey Books:
 Identification number.
 X, Y, Z co-ordinates, and offset pegging data.
 Intersection Angle Value.
 Location sketch with north sign.
 Survey date, surveyor’s name and signature.
This information will be passed onto the COMPANY for review, including any details of propos ed re -
routes.
5.2 Route Survey
CONTRA CTOR shall survey a 60m strip located along t he centre line of the pipeline route (30m
either side). CONTRACTOR shall verify information supplied by COMPANY on site.
Survey shall be carried out in order to establish elevations and c oordinates of all natural and
manmade features wit hin the pipeline corridor. All buildings and structures in any condition, within
the corridor, shall be surveyed. Buried services shall be identified using a suitable pipeline / cable
locator and its bearing relative to the pipeline corridor shall be defined.
CONTRA CTOR shall survey the new pipeline centreline after setting out.
The pipeline route shall be s urveyed in order to produce the following dat a, in addition to t hat
mentioned above.
 A sequential list of centreline co-ordinates (A utoCA D 3D polyline) that represents the original
ground profile and horizontal alignment.
 1:2500 preliminary alignment sheets (the format shall be provided by COMPANY).
 Feature codes as follows:
AM Aerial Marker
RDX Road Crossing
RLX Railway Crossing
RV X Named River Crossing
CLX Manmade Canal
STX Stream Crossing
DTX Ditch Crossing
TRX Track Crossing
SV X Service Crossing
PLX Pipeline Crossing
STN Station Site
VLV Valve Site
The frequency or density of the survey will be determined by the ground profile, nature of topography
and anticipated scale of presentation of data.

5.3 Special Crossings

CONTRA CTOR shall perform a detailed topographic survey at all special crossings, these shall
include road, river, railway and foreign service / utility crossings to enable additional surfac e /
subsurface features to be surveyed for inclusion in the det ailed crossing design.
The topographic survey shall be completed to provide sufficient information for the production of
crossing drawings at a scale of 1:500.
CONTRA CTOR shall allow for the production of crossing drawings at scales appropriate to the leng th
of each crossing. An original ground level profile will be positioned beneath each plan on every
crossing drawing.
CONTRA CTOR shall ensure sufficient points are survey ed to enable an accurat e crossing drawing to
be produced, in plan and profile.
A preliminary crossing schedule, (HOLD3) [S2] s hall be provided by COMPANY which the
CONTRA CTOR shall update during the cours e of the survey works .
5.4 Foreign Services and Existing Utilities
CONTRA CTOR shall obtain co-ordinat es and crossing angle of all existing overhead, surface and
buried foreign servic es / utilities, including parallel pipelines. This shall include, but not be limited to,
power lines / cables, buried pipelines, telephone cables, berms, roads and tracks etc.
During ex ecution of the WORK, CONTRACTOR shall produce and maintain an accurate crossing
schedule detailing the position, size, location, height and depth, where applicable, of all foreign
services / utilities encroaching or crossing the pipeline corridor and pipeline station sites.
In addition, where pipeline alignment runs parallel to or crosses a power line, the following
information shall be c ollected by CONTRA CTOR and included in the Report. Applicable information
shall also be shown on the relevant drawings:
 Power line voltage
 Current carried in the power line
 Distance of power line from the pipeline
 Height of tower or depth of cable (as applicable)
 Length of parallel run (where pipeline alignment runs parallel to power line)
CONTRA CTOR shall submit the crossing schedule for review as the survey progresses. Following
completion of all field survey work, the crossing schedule shall be updated to include the entire
pipeline route.
5.5 Pipeline Valve Station Site Survey
COMPA NY will identify the location of the proposed valve station site on the route drawings issued.
After the location has been confirmed, CONTRACTOR shall establish the site limits during survey
preparation for review on site by COMPANY.
CONTRA CTOR shall carry out a full topographic survey of the site mapping all features (above and
below ground) within the proposed site extending for a distance of 30m outside the proposed
boundaries. If the site is located on sloping ground, COMPA NY may extend the survey area subject
to site conditions.
The topographic survey shall take positions and elevations, as a minimum, on a 5m grid in addition to
specific points, existing boundaries etc. Contour int ervals of 0.2m minor and 1m major shall be
generated for the site drawings.

manufacturer’s recommended frequency) verifications to demonstrate that the initial bench calibration
by the manufacturer is still valid and within specified requirements.
6.4 Geodetic Horizontal and Vertical Datums

The control shall be referenced t o a minimum of 3 geodetic reference stations co-ordinated with
respect to the Ordnance Survey national grid at 1st or 2nd order level. Levels shall be derived from
bench marks of a similar accuracy.
Markers, reference points and monuments for the survey may vary in composition from Hilti or road
nails in concrete, to steel pins to c oncrete monuments. Material for monument ation shall be chosen
in regard to the terrain and situation that exists at the site of the survey and be approved by
COMPA NY. The primary network of survey monuments shall be constructed using markers t hat will
remain in serviceable condition for up to 3 years.
The location of the monuments shall be chos en to offer both convenience to the project and
protection for t he monument. Base line monuments will be used to establish the location of the
centre-line of the entire project. Benchmarks for elevation control shall be located on the most
permanent and stable base convenient to the site. Horizontal and vertical control monuments shall
be placed at intervals of not more than 500m or as directed by the COMPA NY.
6.6 Survey Control Measurements

necessary (e.g. where GPS signal masking occurs), with Total Station and precise level technology.
GPS control survey shall be carried out using a minimum of two dual frequency receivers. Final
locations shall be computed using post-processed static techniques with a minimum of two vectors
being used t o co-ordinate any new survey station. Equipment, data collection process, compilation
and reporting format shall be subject to the approval of COMPA NY prior to implementation. E ach
surveyor shall be responsible for locating the designated dat a and collecting data for subsequent
RTK post-processing.
6.7 Primary Control

project.
The CONTRA CTOR shall tie-in to a sufficient number of primary geodetic control points required to
meet positioning tolerances and ensure consistency within the geodetic network. The
CONTRA CTOR shall devise the appropriate network plan, and shall utilise existing national survey
stations. Values for existing national control stations shall be obtained by the CONTRA CTOR. At
least three horizontal and three vertical geodetic control point ties shall be made t o first or second
order national survey stations from primary control stations.
Sufficient baseli nes shall be independently measured to ensure that all new control stations are
established as an over-determined solution.
The CONTRA CTOR shall liaise with COMPA NY as to existing monuments that may be available.
All existing local horizontal and vertical control station descriptions shall be included in the final
report. Station markers shall be made clearly visible and able to be located by any third party using
the station description sheet.
6.8 Secondary Control
Secondary net work stations shall be established as required to complete the field survey work.
Such stations shall be tied into the primary network and full station descriptions (including witness
marks) provided to the COMPANY.
