The spelling of –ED, regular verbs

A.- Regla general añadir –ED a la forma base del verbo: Work/worked, want/wanted, wash/washed, help/helped.

B.- Acabados en –E añaden –D : Bake/baked, Like/liked, use/used.

C.- Acabados en CONSONANT + Y cambian a –IED : Carry/carried, bury/burried, try/tried.


Pero VOWEL + Y , no cambian : enjoy/enjoyed, play/played.  Excepciones pay/paid, lay/laid, say/said.
D.- Verbos de una sílaba , con 1 vocal escrita+ una consonante escrita , la consonate se dobla. Stop/stopped, plan/planned, travel/travelled.
 Excepciones:Las consonantes -W, -Y, - X no se doblan: Play/played, show/showed.  Pero cook, look son dos vocals: cooked,looked.

E.- En verbos de 2 sílabas la consonante se dobla si el acento cae en la 2ª sílaba, y tienen 1 vocal + 1consonante.
Pre`ferred, ad`mitted But: `entered, `visited (stress 1 st syllable)
 Excepciones:aunque el acento esté en la 1ª sílaba: worship, kidnap, handicap.  worshipped, kidnapped, handicapped
F.- Acabados en –L despues de vocal, doblan-L :
*travel /travelled, * cancel/cancelled, control/controlled,
*signal/signalled, fulfil/fulfilled, quarrel/quarrelled.
 La consonante no se dobla: si hay 2 vocales + L: look / looked
 En Inglés americano no se dobla.
G.- Acabados en –C añaden –K antes de-ED or –ING: Panic/ panicked
