Experience Design: Jazz Clinic 

 
Summary/Overview: 
● Tuning exercise around Circle of Fourths 
● Rhythmic exercise over Drum Genius 
● Introduce blues form 
 
Duration: 10-12 minutes 
 
Materials and Visual Aids: 
● Speakers, aux, and converter 
● Drum Genius 
 
Detailed Process: 
● Tuning exercise on Circle of Fourths 
○ Write on board together (?)/ say it together 
○ Drum genius on, percussionists on vibes/mallets 
○ What is an ostinato? 
■ What ostinato would sound good over this? 
○ Start at C, go around the circle in 4ths ( Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, D, G, C, F) 
○ Repeat but on roots and fifths 
● Call and response on Bb over Drum Genius 
○ Facilitator plays four-beat phrase, immediate response 
○ Around the circle, adding notes every few people (Bb, Eb, F)

HIAD.13 The student will demonstrate, describe, and analyze ensemble skills at an 
advanced level, including 
○ balancing and blending instrumental timbres; 
○ making adjustments to facilitate correct intonation; 
○ matching dynamic levels and playing style; 
○ responding to advanced conducting patterns and gestures; 
○ demonstrating conducting patterns and gestures; and 
○ maintaining a steady beat at various tempos and performing tempo changes in the 
music literature being studied.  
● HIAD.16 The student will create and perform rhythmic and melodic examples to a 
I-IV-V(V​7​)-I chord progression, using call-and-response and improvisation.
