Catfish

Script

Story:
The story revolves around 5 characters. The protagonist or the main character is called Alex. He

lives with his best friend, a man named Griffith. He knows that Alex catfishes. Alex approaches

girls on the tinder and portrays himself as a rich, tall, dark and handsome guy, so as to get them

to like him. There are 2 girls that he catfishes, named Sarah and Lia. Both of them insult and

ditch him as soon as they meet in person and realize that he had been lying. Soon enough, Alex

meets a girl on tinder whom he actually likes and thinks he has finally found “the girl” for him,

which is why he is honest to her and tells her the truth about his looks and his financial status.

The girl, Janine, on the other hand portrays herself is the ultimate beautiful, rich, loving person

and conveniently makes him like her to a serious extent. Though when they meet in person, Alex

realizes that he had been catfished back, for Janine was the friend of Lia, one of the girls he had

catfished.

Characters:

1. Alex: The main character, who is about 5 feet 5 inches in height, average looking, lower

middle-class individual (owns a bicycle) trapped in inferiority complex

2. Griffith: The main character’s best friend. A man with high morals who tries to stop his

friend from catfishing women.

3. Sarah: The first girl Alex catfishes
4. Lia: The second girl Alex catfishes
5. Janine: The girl Alex actually likes and who catfishes him back.

Scene 1 (ext.) Daytime. A local restaurant.

*Fade in*
Alex and Griffith are sitting in a café, having an inexpensive lunch. Alex is on his phone while

Griffith is silently observing him while eating.

Griffith: Alex, why aren’t you eating your lunch? We have got to get back to work in time.

Alex (without glancing up from his phone): Sure we do, but I got more important things going on

right now.

Griffith (looking at him confused): More important things? Like what?

Alex: Like meeting new people on social media.

Griffith (in a serious tone): Alex, you call it ‘meeting’, but you do know that the standard word

for what you do is catfishing.

Alex (irritatingly): You call yourself a friend, but you do know that the standard word for what

you are is “moron”.

Griffith (not taking much offense and expressing his concern): Someday, you are going to regret

doing this, my friend.

Alex (turning his back to Griffith): Like I regret becoming friends with you, my moron.

(Chuckles slightly)

Griffith: Say what you may, but mess always starts with fun and games. You are lying to girls

today just to have them like you.

Alex: Griffey (Alex’s nickname for Griffith), check this out! This girl, Sarah, has agreed to seem

me in person. She says she likes me and would love to meet for a drink.

Griffith (taking a carefree look at Alex’s phone): You mean she likes you, as in Alex, or the

“you”, who is 6 feet tall, dark and handsome guy, filthy rich, straight out of a mills-and-boons

story?
Alex (taking his phone away in excitement, not a single expression of shame or remorse on his

face): She said she likes me, what does it matter if I am not the guy I said I was.

Griffith: Alex, I am warning you. If you keep doing this, you will soon find yourself in trouble.

Alex (irritatingly): So would you, if you keep talking any longer. (Starts typing back on his

phone).

Scene 2 (int.): A small bar/club, full of young people.

Sarah, a young beautiful girl, in her early twenties, is sitting at the bar, sipping through her

drink and checking her watch constantly, as if waiting for someone. Alex, dressed in suit that he

borrowed from Griffith sees her and nervously starts walking towards her. In the flashback, all of

Griffith’s words ring in his ears, making him more nervous and shaky.

Alex: Hi, you are Sarah right?

Sarah turns to Alex, and is about to say hi when her smile vanishes. She looks up and down at

the guy in front of her, who is barely 5’5, draped in a suit that barely fit him; nothing like the

man she had seen on tinder. She stares at him for few seconds, then speaks.

Sarah: uumm…hi…are you…Alex?

Alex: Yes, yes of course I am Alex. Look I know I am nothing like you though I would be but

you said you liked me as a person, so I think my height or physical appearance ought to make

any difference.

Sarah (looking at him in disbelief, suddenly gets angry, grabs her bag and gets up to leave ): I

think you forgot to grow your self-respect just like your height! (Walks out)
Alex is left staring at her back, flabbergasted but not much ashamed. He starts walking out of the

club and reaches the parking. He approaches a car, places his hand on a car door knob but

stops! He recalls he doesn’t own a car. He turns around and walks over to his bicycle. He sits on

it but looks back at the car, wishfully, before cycling away.

Scene 3 (ext.) Evening. A local park.

*Few days later*

A young and beautiful girl, named Lia, is waiting on a bench in the local park. There are people

playing around her, with their kids. She notices a guy arrive at the park gate and park his

bicycle. She ignores him, until she realizes he is walking up to her. As he comes nearer, her face

expression change, as the realization of who he is dawns upon her.

Alex: Hi, you are Lia, right?

Lia (confused): Uumm yeah… I am Lia indeed, but aren’t you…” (She leaves her sentence

midway)

Alex: Yes yea, I am Alex. I am so glad you could make it. I have liked you since the moment

when started talking on tinder. I am sure you will like me more once you get to (he continues

speaking without caring for the shock she is in. Lia then cuts his mid-sentence)

Lia: Alex, you said you were 6’4 inches tall and that you owned a Benz. Are you the very same

Alex?

Alex (rubbing his hands in nervousness): Ah well! Yes I am that very Alex. I know this isn’t

what you were expecting to see. But trust me, other than being not tall or rich like I claimed, I

am a very nice man.

Lia: But…you were a different person when we talked online.

Alex (grinning proudly): Haha, well then consider this my idea of “surprise”.

Lia narrows her eyes at him, looks at him in disbelief and then stands up.

Lia: Oh well, here is my idea of surprise then!

Lia slaps Alex, in front of the public in the park and leaves him. For the first time, Alex is

ashamed and humiliated as people around him point and laugh at him.

Scene 4 (int.) Night. Alex and Griffith’s apartment.

Griffith enters the apartment and Alex runs over to him. Alex is all excited and happy and shows

Griffith his phone.

Alex: Griffey! Look what just happened! Janine, another one of the girls I met on tinder, wants to

meet me.

Griffith: Alex I told you can’t keep doing this. You can’t fool (Alex cuts midsentence)

Alex: No, no! Hear me out! I have told her everything, how I look, where I live, what I do for a

living. She is so impressed by my honesty that she immediately admitted her liking for me and

she wants to meet me now. Can you believe this?

Griffith: As a matter of fact, I can’t. But I am glad you changed your ways. At least you are not

catfishing anymore.

Alex: Yeah! I am so excited I can’t even begin to tell you!

Griffith smiles at Alex, who is again busy in his phone and both go to their respective beds.
Scene 5 (int.) Night time. Local club.
Alex is sitting at the bar, anxiously waiting for Janine. He is nervous but happy that he does not

have to fear being humiliated. Soon enough, he hears a girl call out his name from behind and

excitedly he turns to say hello.

Janine: Alex?

Alex (turning around swiftly on the stool he is sitting): Hi Jan…! (He is unable to complete his

sentence)

The girl standing in front of him is short and stout and wearing a dress that clearly isn’t hers.

She has a lot of make up on and a hairstyle from the 70’s.

Janine: Hey. Nice to meet you Alex.

She extends her hand for handshake, which Alex accepts but is very shaky.

Alex: I am sorry to ask this, but are you that Janine whom I met on tinder?

Janine: Why! Of course I am. Why would you ask that?

Alex: Oh well… it’s just that, you, kind of, look different in reality. I thought…

Janine: What did you think Alex?

Alex: I thought you were tall and sleek and moderately fashionable if not extremely. At least, this

is what your profile showed Janine. You lied to me all this time?

Janine: Oh come one Alex! I wasn’t lying. I am just a bit different than what I seem to be on

tinder. But I am a nice girl, I am sure you will like me once you get to know me.

She takes Alex from his hand and is about to walk him to the seats when he pulls away.
Alex: How can you expect me to like you when all you did was fool me?

Janine: Alex, you are just creating mountains of molehills. Who doesn’t manipulate information

on social media, so as to attract people? I am sure you did it. Come on now, tell me, didn’t you

ever lie to get someone’s attention?

An expression of guilt passes on Alex’s face. But he denies it.

Alex: No, I never did that and it’s shameful that you think lying to get someone’s attention is

okay!

Janine: Seriously Alex? You think this is shameful? And what is it when a guy admits to being

6’4 inches tall and the owner of a Benz, but in reality he is none of it?

Alex’s eyes open wide in shock. His forehead covers in perspiration and his hands get shaky.

Alex: How do you… I mean who told you about that?

Sarah (the first girl) taps on Alex’s shoulder, who jumps up and turns around and stares at her

open mouth.

Sarah: I told her Alex. I told her all about the catfishing you did and what a horrible little man

you are. When I say, I mean little in every sense of the word little. Thankyou Janine, for helping

me out and teaching this moron a lesson. I hope he can get over his complexes and be a real man

from now on! Come, let’s get ourselves celebration drinks.

Both the girls walk to the bar and Alex leaves the club immediately, sits on the pavement next to

his bicycle and contemplates over what had just happened. Griffith’s words ring in his ear all

over again.
