Teacher: Sarah Dalke and Maureen Ryerson Date: 2/26/19 Lesson #: 3

School: Shepardson Stem Elementary Grade Level: Third Content Area: Math

Lesson Idea/Topic and Introduce students to estimating liquid volume. Help them to practice
Rational/Relevance: estimating and experimenting with liquid volume.

Student Profile: There are three major groups of students during math in this class. One
group will have a strong understanding of the concept and will finish the
assignment quickly. The other two groups will need additional scaffolding
and tools to help them comprehend the material.

Content Standard(s) addressed by this lesson: (Write Content Standards directly from the standard)

3 Mathematics 1.2: Time and attributes of objects can be measured with appropriate tools.
3 Mathematics 1.1: The whole number system describes place value relationships and forms the foundation for efficient algorithms.
3 RWC 2.1: Strategies are needed to make sense of various genres.
Understandings: (Big Ideas)

Students will have a better understanding of what estimation is and how to estimate precisely.

Students will be able to test their estimations to find exact liquid volume values.

Students will understand how to pull information out of a word problem to then solve the problem.

Inquiry Questions: (Essential questions relating knowledge at end of the unit of instruction, select applicable questions from standard)

 Why do we need standard units of measurement?

 Why do we measure volume?

 When would we need to use liquid volume measurements in real life?

 How can readers use different strategies to help them understand the real world problems (word problems)?

Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets)

Every student will be able to: (Create your own lesson objectives from the standard using student voice)

I can: Work productively to try to solve the Solve and Share warm up question.

This means: I will use my background knowledge on number sense to think through how many liters will fit in the bowl.

I can: Participate during the video lesson.

This means: I will interact with my group and share our answers to stop and think questions.

I can: actively follow along during the guided practice.

This means: I will fill in my answers to the guided question problems while participating in he class discussion.

I can: Work to solve the independent practice questions.

This means: I will use my knowledge on estimations and liquid volume to try to solve the assigned problems.

List of Assessments: (Write the number of the learning targets associated with each assessment)

• Solve and Share observations- Target one

• Video Participation- Target two

• Thumb Check- Target three

• Capability to solve independent practice problems- Target four

Planned Lesson Activities

Name and Purpose of Lesson Lesson 13-7: Whole Numbers and Fractions

Co-Teaching Which model(s) will be used?

Will co-teaching models be utilized in this lesson? Yes _X_ One teach one observe then small group co-teaching
No ___ Why did you choose this model(s) and what are the teachers’ roles?
I will be leading the activity. Mrs. Ryerson will observe and monitor progress. She will also help
scaffold students who need additional help during the group time following the whole group
lesson.
Approx. Time and Materials • Solve and Share (10 mins) - Math book, document camera, water, bowl, water bottle,
watering can, bucket, cup, graduated cylinders.
• Video lesson (5 mins) - Document camera, smart board
• Guided Practice (5 mins) - Math book, document camera
• Independent practice and group work (20-35 mins) - Math book
Anticipatory Set The strategy I intend to use is: Questioning
I am using this strategy here because: Get children thinking while gaining a better understanding
of their current knowledge.
Procedures The strategy I intend to use is: Guided
I am using this strategy here because: I am introducing the students to a new topic.

Closure The strategy I intend to use is: Ask questions and give time for independent practice.
I am using this strategy here because: It will remind the students of what they will be learning
about before sending them off to work independently.
