Ethan Yang: My choice

When I was growing up, I knew I wanted to do something that would help people. The
first few things I thought about were a police officer, a firefighter, or a doctor. As I was
going through high school I still did not know what job I wanted. I took a year off after
high school to figure out what job would be right for me. I stumbled across registered
nursing (RN). It fit that I did not have to go through a lot of schooling like a doctor but I
can still help people. The next step after that was choosing between a physician assistant
(PA) or a nurse practitioner (NP). I still have not decided which one I want to go into.
Which does not bother me since I went through the same thing in high school. As my
year comes to an end, I start second-guessing my choices thinking “Do I really want to go
to school for this? Do I want to spend my time in classes I don’t want to take?” While
having these negative thoughts the only positive one is “I will always have a job where
ever I go” which is my drive right now. I am not 100% sure if this will be my final
decision but this is what my goal is right now.
I am currently a student at State College of Florida: Manatee-Sarasota, pursuing an
Associate of Science in Nursing. I am hoping the courses I take will help me decide if I
want to be a registered nurse. Outside of school, I work at a Bed Bath and Beyond as a
part-time job. Since this job does not help my field of study, I have decided to get my
certified medical assistant certificate to work in a medical clinic (MA).
First, I am going to get my medical assistant certificate. Next, I plan on slowly get my
skills and experience to become a registered nurse or find another job that interests me.
While pursuing my nursing career I hope I come to like my decision. If I do I will
continue to become either a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner. I hope this job will
excite me enough to not lose interest in my choice.
