military-ban-2019-1

Apparently there are people who can kill and die worse than others according to the President of
the United States. Those being the transgender individuals in the united states military. The ban of
transgender soldiers in the military influences society by creating undue panic about misconceived
notions that are easily spread by the internet.
The most concerning aspect of the cases is the misinformation being spread by the President and
members of the Department of Defence. These people are indeed in positions of power, and therefore
likely to be believed in by the masses. That is not the case.
The ruling, as stated by the DoD, is “NOT a ban on service by transgender persons,” but only
those who wish to present as something other than their biological sex. To enroll, the soldier must not
have “gender dysphoria,” therefore being “stable” for at least 36 months prior to applying. But most
transgender people have gender dysphoria, which as the dictionary states, is “the condition of feeling
one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex.” This
almost makes it seem like being transgender is akin to a pesky illness that needs to be cured before going
out of quarantine.
Trump tweeted that having transgender people in the military “hinter military effectiveness,”
“disrupt unit cohesion” and “tax military resources,” as stated by Time Magazine in an article published
on January 22 by W.J. Hennigan. But in fact, all five military chiefs of staff state that the inclusion did not
“cause readiness issues.” Economically, the estimated costs of medical care would be about $2.4 to $8.4
million, which at first seems like a lot, but pales when it only comes out to “one-tenth” of the annual
medical spending.
This ban highlights harmful misconceptions about transgender people. Why are these people less
deserving to serve our country? The simple reason is fear and hatred that lies in ignorance that will only
be spread and thus influences society.
time “As always, we treat all transgender persons with respect and dignity,” she said in a
statement. “DoD’s proposed policy is NOT a ban on service by transgender persons. It
is critical that DoD be permitted to implement personnel policies that it determines are
necessary to ensure the most lethal and combat effective fighting force in the world.” -
Lt. Col. Carla M. Gleason, a Defense Department spokeswoman.

All five military chiefs of staff have publicly testified that the transgender policy did
not cause readiness issues.

The policy does allow transgender troops to serve but only if they do so in their
biological sex, do not have a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria, or can show a
36-month period of "stability" prior to military service.

The policy also disqualifies those who may require a medical transition based on a
diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Citing "considerable scientific uncertainty" and blurred
lines "that demarcate male and female standards," the defense department maintains
that the requirements of transition-related treatment come at too high a cost for
taxpayers and could result in impairments to unit cohesion and readiness (how soon
they could deploy).

This would require a transgender person to prove they have not experienced
discomfort with their biological sex for three years before joining

In an interview with the Washington Post, Iyengar explained that the actual costs of
medical care for transgender troops — which would amount to about $2.4 to $8.4
million — would comprise only one-tenth of 1% of the military's annual medical
spending.
