Building Footprints

Buildings come and go,

But footprints are forever.

POLICY
Building Footprints

Building Footprints is a type of editing for

Places and Spaces where we outline building
perimeters.

From Aerial Imagery
● Buildings requiring manual edit < 50%

Building Entrances
(Future Feature)
Entrances:
● Footprints are “Geometric container” for Building
• Combined with Building footprints Attributes:
○ Building Names
○ Address points
○ Entrances and exits
○ Access points

9
Footprints vs Places and Physical Spaces

Footprints is a subset of Places and Physical Spaces

● No Point Marker for building footprints.

● Footprints mode models only buildings, and not parking lots and other
buildings that belong to one Physical Space.

● Footprints identifies only buildings, and not large Places of Interest like
Physical Spaces.

Footprint Definitions
Building: a man-made physical structure. They
are often used as Uber rider pick-up/drop-off
location.

Footprint: a digital representation of a building

that can have information like addresses and
business names attached to it.
What are the requirements for a footprint?
1. The building must have an address.

2. The building and/or structure must have a location that could be used as a
pick-up/drop-off point.

Evidences:
Parcels - External Evidence Layer
Address Points - Road Network Layer
Aerial - Base Map Layer
Physical Space Layer - Features Layer

Footprint Principles
1. Shapes should be simple - (think Tetris)

2. Shapes should align to building axis & road

3. Model only main buildings and NOT supplemental buildings

4. Model nothing under 50 sq meters

Do NOT model bay windows, awnings, porches, decks, courtyards, garages or

sheds.
Footprint Principles (continued)
5. Aim for 100% completion

- Model every building that touches your AOI

7. Do NOT move vertices

- Doing so might cause unintentional edits

8. Right angles, right angles, right angles

Simplify
Grade Measurements
Grade A - 5 m
Grade B - 10 m

For training purposes:

● Commercial buildings will be done at the 5 m spec.
● Residential buildings will be done at the 10 m spec.

TIP: Average car length is 5 m.

INSTRUCTIONS
Footprints - Colors
Automatic Footprints = Green

Automatic Footprints after edit = Teal

Created Footprints = Purple

When to Edit, Delete, or Create a footprint:
Every building must be inspected to determine this:
If the automatic footprint meets the quality spec, then no edit is
required.

If the automatic footprint only needs minor adjustments to meet

quality spec, make edits to the existing footprint.

If the automatic footprint requires major editing, delete the footprint

and create a new one to meet quality spec.

If the automatic footprint is a false positive, delete it.

If there is no automatic footprint, create one.

Editing Footprints

1. Edit automatic footprints to maintain quality spec.

2. Use “Reshape by Polyline” (Alt + B) tool together with the Parallel (Alt + Z) &

Perpendicular (Alt + A) drawing tools to keep 90 degree angles.

3. Rotate and move footprints.

Adding Footprints
Similar to adding polygons in Places mode.

1. Must add missing footprints.

2. Use the Rectangle (Alt + R) and Rotated Rectangle (Alt + V) tools.

3. Use the “Draw Freehand” (Alt + F) tool together with Parallel &
Perpendicular tools.

4. Use the Duplicate Polygons tool to mass produce footprints. (future

feature)
Deleting Footprints
Footprints should only appear over buildings.

1. Footprints over anything that is not a building must

be selected and deleted.

2. One or more footprints can be selected and deleted

at a time by hitting Ctrl + Left Click, and then
pressing the (Alt +D) or button.
Splitting Footprints
Single footprints often need to be split into multiple footprints. This is
typically seen on a building that contains multiple tenants that have their
own address.

1. Use the “Split by Polyline” (Alt + E) tool to represent different

addresses.

2. Use the “Split by Polyline” tool together with Parallel/Perpendicular

tools to maintain 90 degree angles.

- Split footprints should be just that, split. The footprint should not be
moved after it is split.
Trees
● Trees impede the operator’s ability to see the whole outline of the building.

● Approximate the actual footprint of the building.

23
Building Lean
Building Lean = Tilt Displacement

The objective = ensure the footprint does not intersect

with the road geometry.

1. Model the building footprint according to the structure’s roof.

2. Analyze the building in order to see where the base of the building meets the
ground.

3. Click and drag the footprint accordingly to match the base outline.

4. Use corners of buildings to help identify where the footprint belongs.
