Lesson Plan 1
2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and
measuring tapes.
Students will be able to identify and recite the measurement terms with their definitions.
A. Anticipatory Set: The teacher will read through the book Me and the Measure of Things. The teacher will ask the students to
clap every time they hear the word “Measure” as she reads through the book. The teacher will ask the students questions about
the book like, “What did the character in the story do? What objects did she measure? What did she use to measure objects?”
Then, the teacher will explain that today they will begin a new unit on measurement, and they will get to measure things just
B. Student Learning Activities: The teacher will begin the lesson by creating an Anchor Chart. In the Anchor Chart, the teacher
will go over measuring terms and tools. Students will recite the measurement terms and their definitions. They will do this by
repeating after the teacher. Students will also define measurement terms by playing “Beach Ball Vocab.” The teacher will
throw the beach ball to a student to start the game. The student who caught it will read the word that their left thumb landed on.
The student will give a simple definition of that word, and then, that student will throw the beach ball to another student. This
process will repeat several times until all the vocab words have been read through at least two times.
C. Conclusion: The teacher will hand out post-it notes to each student. On their post-it note, students will define two vocabulary
words that they learned today. The teacher will collect these whenever they are done.
D. Differentiation Strategy: Students will be learning new vocabulary words to add to their cognitive knowledge. Students will
be up and moving around when they are throwing the vocab beach ball which is a psychomotor activity. This will also
incorporate Kinesthetic learners. The Anchor Chart will accommodate visual learners and auditory learners because they will

Lesson Plan 2
2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and
measuring tapes.
Students will be able to use rulers to measure various objects around the classroom.
Students will be able to record their results by writing them down on their data sheet.
A. Anticipatory Set: The teacher will have a stuffed animal at the front of the room. She will ask for a student volunteer to come
up to the front of the room and measure the stuffed animal with blocks. The class will count how many blocks it takes to
measure the stuffed animal. The teacher will explain that this is one way to measure something but that there are easier, more
efficient ways to measure objects. The teacher will then move into the lesson.
B. Student Learning Activities: The teacher will tell the students that today they will be practicing measuring objects by using a
ruler. The teacher will explain the steps of how to use a ruler and read a ruler. The teacher will give the students a few
examples on the board. Then, students will complete the “Monster Mash Measurement” activity where students will have a list
of objects that they will need to measure with their ruler. Students will go around the classroom to find these objects and
measure them. They will record their measurements on their data sheet. Then, students will turn in their worksheet when it is
completed.
C. Conclusion: The teacher will give students an Exit Ticket. There will be two objects on their Exit Ticket that they will need to
measure with their ruler. Students should write down their answers, and then they will turn it in when completed.
D. Differentiation Strategy: The students will learn how to use a ruler which will add to their cognitive knowledge. Students
will be physically holding the objects they are measuring which will cater to visual learners. They will also be moving around
the classroom to find objects to measure which will tie in kinesthetic learners and psychomotor knowledge.
IV. Assessment
A. Informal: The teacher will be circulating the room and observing the students as they measure. The teacher will also look over
the students’ work when it is completed to see how the students did. Also, the teacher will use the Exit Tickets to informally
2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and
measuring tapes.
Students will be able to use yardsticks to measure the length of their classmates.
Students will be able to record their results accurately on their data sheet.
A. Anticipatory Set: The teacher will start a class discussion asking students what they enjoyed about the measurement lesson
on rulers yesterday. Students can raise their hands to answer, and the teacher will write students’ responses on the board. The
teacher will then ask students what they learned from their measurement activity yesterday. The teacher will record students’
answers on the board again. The teacher will then lead into the lesson by saying that they will practice measuring again using a
different tool.
B. Student Learning Activities: The teacher will introduce yard sticks to the class. The teacher will explain that this is another
tool you can use to measure objects. The teacher will demonstrate how to measure using a yard stick. The class will do a few
practice measurements on some objects. Then, the teacher will assign students to have a partner for their activity. Students will
go outside and trace one another’s portraits with sidewalk chalk. Then, they will use the yardsticks to measure the height of
their chalk tracing and the height of their partner’s chalk tracing. Students will record their data on their data sheet. Then, a
pair of students will find another pair of students and measure their chalk tracings. Students will again record that data. This
C. Conclusion: On a post-it note, students will compare measuring with a ruler to measuring with a yard stick. Students should
write at least two sentences. Students will turn these in to the teacher.
D. Differentiation Strategy: This lesson will accommodate kinesthetic and visual learners because they will be outside and
tracing one another with sidewalk chalk. This will also help increase psychomotor learning. This lesson will also increase
affective learning since students are getting to measure their own height.
IV. Assessment
A. Informal: The teacher will be available to assist students outside if they need help measuring. She will also be paying close
attention to how students are doing with measuring and recording their data. Also, the teacher will look at the students’ post-it
