Name: Sarah Rolfsen and Emma Baker Lesson Title: Painting without Painting
Date: 4/16/2019 Grade Level: Pre-k Circle one: ECE PKSN
Standard(s)/Guideline(s): Approaches Toward Learning: Creativity: Innovation and Invention: Use imagination and creativity to interact with objects and
materials.
Physical Well-Being and Motor Development: Motor Development: Small Muscle: Touch, Grasp, Reach, Manipulate: Coordinate the use of hands, fingers, and
wrists to manipulate objects and perform tasks requiring precise movements.
Pre-assessment of current knowledge: We will observe how the children interact with materials during play time and previous art experiences. We will also
observe the children’s small motor skills during activities such as play time, snack time, and art time. From these observations, we will keep track of their ability
levels.

Reflection: (What have you learned about your students? How will this inform future instruction?)

Leading up to this lesson, we observed the students participate in painting activities many times. The students enjoy

painting and other art forms very much. We wanted to plan a lesson that allowed for students to be creative, but also offer some

structure for them. Painting with unusual objects gave the students an opportunity to be creative and explore the possibilities of

each item. We chose the objective because it allowed for the use of open-ended materials for the students to use and allowed

for a child-centered activity.

Throughout this lesson, the small group of students was very engaged in the activity. At first the students seemed a little

hesitant about the objects provided. They were not used to painting with objects other than a paint brush. After showing the

students what they could do with some of the objects, they started to experiment themselves. One student became very

involved in the project and did not want to stop. He kept asking for different colors and objects to use on his piece of artwork.

The others were engaged in the artwork as well, but he was experimenting himself, while the others were just doing things that

we demonstrated. The lesson helped us learn that our students are willing to explore using various objects to do activities they

are already exposed to. We can use this information to plan future lessons using various objects for other art activities they have

been exposed to. We could take it a step further and have the students explore outside to find objects they could use to create a

piece of artwork.
