Antarctica, the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole, is a virtually uninhabited, ice-

until the 19th century. However, in February 1775, during his second voyage, Captain Cook called
the existence of such a polar continent "probable" and in another copy of his journal he wrote:"
firmly believe it and it's more than probable that we have seen a part of it".
Atlantis is a fictional island mentioned within an allegory on the hubris of nations in Plato's
works Timaeus and Critias, where it represents the antagonist naval power that besieges
"Ancient Athens", the pseudo-historic embodiment of Plato's ideal state in The Republic
