When Life Hits

As a whole we all undergo some changes that either makes us better or worst. Life on an

island is knowing you have to figure out a way to survive. In the lord of the flies the boys already

have enough order to understand that they need to each have jobs. This allows them to really see

who’s strong enough to take on these rolls. In the novel you can see how jack, ralph and piggy

all change into dynamic characters.

Through fear and respect from others jack gets his own personal power from it. Jacks

given a roll that start his identity within the group of boys stuck on the island."Jack's in charge of

the choir. They can be—what do you want them be?" "Hunters. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each

other with shy liking. The rest began to talk eagerly” (1.254-257). He’s a hunter now he

assembles a team and that’s who really respects and follows him in the end. Jack becomes a

savage not caring really what anyone thinks or says. “Jack planned his new face. He made one

cheek and one eye-socket white, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a

black bar of charcoal across from right ear to left jaw […]. "Samneric. Get me a coconut. An

empty one" (4.31-33). Now he demands what he wants, he is who he is, and he doesn’t plan to

change at all.

Strong minded and a good leader ralph gets majority of the vote to be their chief. Ralph

realizes the situation that there in and knows that someone needs to be charge. "Shut up," said

Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things."
(1.229-231). He not only commands it but he stands behind it, showing the boys that he’s

confident in being there leader. He knows who he is not fully but at least on the island and rejects

anything that’s going to change that. “Then we must go as we are," said Ralph, "and they won't

be any better." Eric made a detaining gesture. “But they'll be painted! You know how it is. "The

others nodded. They understood only too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing

paint brought” (11.63-66). They realized that making this move will hide them from who they

are and don’t think it’s a good idea.

The shy but very loud spoken boy named piggy finds his inner change when he finds his

voice. Piggy’s specs are something that’s materialistic but deeply apart of his identity. “[Piggy]

wiped his glasses and adjusted them on his button nose. The frame had made a deep, pink V on

the bridge”(1.58). Piggy’s specs play a key role in the boys survival. At this point he stops caring

about what people think about him. "I don't care what they call me," he said confidentially, "so

long as they don't call me what they used to call me in school." Ralph was faintly interested.

"What was that?" The fat boy glance over his shoulder, then leaned toward Ralph. He whispered.

"They used to call me Piggy!"(1.6570). knowing this he’s very cautious and starts developing a

harder but still soft shell.

In conclusion, the lord of the flies makes you want to know what inner changes that you

have made over the years. The boys find out what they’ve become towards the peak of the novel.

Many things can change a person, whether it’s physical or mental. The boys are caught in this

situation, and make the best the only way they know how. Jack, Piggy and Ralph all undergo an

inner change in their own individual way.
