The first drawing on my portfolio are my two pre-instruction drawing done at the beginning of

the term and the last day of class. This two drawings are the best prove of the improvement in my

drawing skills. I think it shows the skills I have learned from negative spaces and shapes to perspective. I

learn to observe first and have patience, instead of drawing in a rush. Not only do I realized the

differences while I draw, but I also feel the difference. I remember in the beginning of class I would be

frustrated within ten minutes of drawing and my hands would move in a fast pace because I was in such

a rush to finish. Now, I get lost while drawing. I take my time with every drawing and even take my time

to step back to look at the drawing as a whole before continuing. I think this has to do with this class

teaching me how to put my right-side brain in control while drawing. When I was young, I always knew I

had the motivation and skills to draw but learning the difference between the left and right brain was so

helpful. I realized that when my left brain takes control, my mind clouds up and the frustration steps in.

Throughout the class, I learn how to let my right-side brain take control. Now, I can feel when my brain

shifts left to right, which helps me control my concentration and the way I look at the objects I am

drawing. Letting my right-side brain let me approach hard drawings calmly and with a clear mind.

Approaching a hard drawing with a clear mind allowed me to be able to anticipate and use the right

skills to complete a tough drawing successfully. Now, I believe that to know how to draw successfully or

to improve these certain skills must be learned. I think that It is easier as an artist to view things with the

right-side brain and it’s helpful in improving our own drawing skill.

The other drawings I added on my profile are the drawing that I believe show the best

improvement in my drawing skills. I think they all show contour lines, shading, negative shapes and

spaces. I also have some portraits showing perception and measuring skills of the face. One of my best

improvements are the portraits, but something I learned in this class that I was never able to learn until

know is how to draw ears and mouths. I learned many drawing skills and had so much improvement in

my own skills, I would definitely recommend it to others.

Even though this class is about drawing, I can definitely say that it taught me a lot more than

drawing. It definitely taught me skills I could use outside that class room. Some things I would say that I

learned would be patience, problem solving, looking at the bigger picture (metaphorical and literal) and

that taking time with things. I learned that doing those things will save me the first time around from

doing double the time and effort which usually ends up leading into frustration. These are all lesson I

can apply to my daily life for the rest of my life time. This class taught me to approach any type of

problem with patience and a clear head. That way you can see all your options and what fits best to

resolve the problem. It’s like this class opened my third eye. The way I approach tough drawings is the

way I will start to approach my problems. Instead of stressing about certain situations, it better to take a

step back and take the time to approach these issues. This class opened my eyes to things I didn’t see

before. One last lesson from this class, is changing the way I think. I used to believe “early bird gets the

worm”, meaning I usually rush through my day just to get things done, but this class taught me “slow

and steady wins the race” meaning that I learn to take my time and be patient. I learn to live in the

moment and enjoy what I am doing now. With that being said, I do feel like this class made a big impact

to my lifestyle and the way I handle certain things.
