For my service learning, I was placed at Leading Edge Academy, with a 7th and 8th
grade science teacher, Mrs. Smith. Smith would always start the class by welcoming the
students, and ask them how their day has been so far. This would allow the students to say what
they wanted before class and then tune in for the lesson. During lessons, most days the students
were taking notes, participating when Smith would ask a question, and followed along with the
material in their science textbooks. However, there were days where the students were restless,
talkative and not wanted to pay attention to the lesson. On these days, Smith would have a hard
time teaching what she needed to, and it would result in the students having more homework
because they got less of it done in class. For the set-up Smith had for her room wasn’t super
welcoming. Everything was very white or tan which made it look and feel like a place that is not
I thought it was a very good idea to have to students get what they needed to out before
class even started. By doing that you take away a lot of the need for the students to be talking
and not focused during the lesson. On the days when the students were very good Smith wouldn't
really acknowledge it or reward them for being good. I think all students in school, especially
younger ones, should be rewarded or at least thanked for showing good behavior in class and
doing what they need to do. By doing that, it will make the students want to pay attention and act
