“Problems Met by Grade 11 English Learners

in DMC for the S.Y 2016-2017”

Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Scope

Introduction

In 21st century it is beyond questionable that the English language has become the lingua,

the language use for communication between people living in different countries, widely spoken

and written worldwide and has more second-language speakers than any language. (Leena-luna,

2012) This language has its own set of rules in grammar, correct pronunciation, vocabulary, etc.

It is important to know and master this language since it is used almost everywhere among

scholars and educated people, as it is the world media language, and the language of cinema, TV,

pop music and the computer world. It is also used as a medium of instruction and communicating

foreign countries. English has become a key factor in the development of the nations globally.

Most countries include English as there subject to meet global standard as we are living in

the world of globalization. English is the first and foremost criteria when someone is applying for

a job or seeking admission in a reputed college, university or institution. Companies prioritize

those candidates that are fluent in English and have the relevant qualification and skill set.

Most students in DMC are born and raised in Dipolog City, where Cebuano has been their

native language. It was this language they first spoke and became comfortable with. Though in

school we are taught a new language, English. Learning this language is a gradual process and it
needs a lot of patients. But most students seldom use it outside their classroom as well as during

class, resulting to uprising problems.

Theoretical framework

Krashen refers this as the Comprehension Hypothesis. It states that learners acquire

language when they are exposed to input at i+1, where i is the current state or stage of language

proficiency. Learners use their existing acquired linguistic competence together with their general

world knowledge to make sense of the messages they receive in language just beyond where they

currently are (the +1). Given comprehensible input at i+1, acquisition will take place effortlessly

and involuntarily.

This theory has clear implications that a student understands a message by translating the

English passage into their native language, understands it, then gives a feedback in their native

language and translate it in English.

Input Process Output

English Second language English

This shows how problems start to come up. If students are not so familiar with the second

language (English) then they would have a hard time understanding it in their native language

where they can fully comprehend it. With this, students may not be able attain new knowledge

regarding the English language.
