ABSTRACT

IMPROVING THE WRITING ABILITY OF GRADE 7 STUDENTS OF

STO. TOMAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL YEAR 2015-2016,
THROUGH SENTENCE WRITING DRILLS, AN ACTION
RESEARCH, NOVEMBER 2015. RESEARCHER: CHERRY ROSE
INIGO GUILLERMO.

This study aimed to determine the writing ability of Grade 7

students through Sentence Writing Drills.

This action research was conducted at Sto. Tomas National High

School during the first grading period of school year 2015- 2016.

The respondents of this study were the 37 Grade 7- Mahogany

students (Experimental Group ) of Sto. Tomas National High School, and
the 38 Grade 7- Narra students (Controlled Group).

The teacher-made test was used as the main instrument in

determining the writing ability of the Grade7 students. The mean was
employed to compare the scores of thereafter students in the pre-test and
post-test. The T-test was used to determine between the initial and final
performance of the students.
vi

The pre-test was conducted on the 20th day of August 2015. The
post-test conducted on the 17th day of September 2015, after the teaching
–learning activity.

Results revealed that a significant difference existed between the

pre-test and post-test scores of the students. This implies that “ Sentence
Writing Drills” is effective in improving the writing ability of the
students

Based from the findings of the study, the researcher arrived at the
conclusions that there is significant difference between the levels of
performance of the Grade 7 students during the pre-test and post-test and
the level of performance of the students in writing was enhanced from
needs Improvement to Satisfactory. Thus, the use of sentence writing
drills is effective in improving the writing ability of the Grade 7 students
of Sto. Tomas National High School.

Based on the conclusion, the researcher recommended the

following: 1.) The school administrators should provide materials like
workbooks for the students to use and answer for them to enhance their
writing abilities. They should ask donations from generous people as a
way for the administrators to provide such materials. 2.) The teacher
should encourage students to make writing as a hobby to improve their
writing ability especially in their vacant times and guide them in applying
the rules on conducting sentences. 3.) Parents and teachers should join
hands together in
vi

helping the students develop their writing ability in constructing

effective sentences by explaining thoroughly the steps or rules to be
followed 4.) The students should be encouraged to learn and master the
rules in grammar and the correct usage of words in writing sentences. 5.)
Further study should be conducted using the strategy “Sentence Writing
Drills” to improve the writing ability of the students in other year levels.
6.) Researchers should validate the content of instrument or
questionnaires to be used in conducting a study. 7.) The post-test should
be immediately given after the last lesson.
