HENDRA BAKTI

TL 509 SPRING 2018

BOSTON UNIVERSITY
INTRODUCTION

This lesson plan provides a series of review exercises and activities for students at
elementary up to pre-intermediate level. These activities and exercises are created
to cover the components of grammar as well as speaking, writing, and reading skills.

This lesson plan is compiled with the assumption that students have learned all the
materials related to the given exercises so that they are deemed to have the principle
knowledge about those particular lessons.

In order to get every part of this lesson plan connected, the author brings forward a
theme namely WONDERFUL INDONESIA. The them simply talks about ten
international visitors who are participating in a student exchange in Indonesia. The
reason behind the choice of this theme is that this lesson plan is envisioned to be
used as a real lesson plan for the teaching of English in Indonesia. Presenting the
names of the famous places in Indonesia will provide students with a contextual and
real learning experience.

Activity 1

Class Survey

In this delightful worksheet activity, students complete a survey and then use the
results to construct comparative and superlative sentences.

Procedures

 Each student is given a copy of the worksheet. The students answer six questions
on the worksheet and write their answers in the second column of the table. The
questions that should be answered are as follows:
How old are you?
What is the price of your mobile phone?
How tall are you?
How many languages do you speak?
What time do you usually wake up?
How far is your home from school?

You Student A Student B Student C Student D

Age

Mobile phone price

Height

Languages spoken

Time you wake up

Distance to school

 When they have finished, divide the students into group of six, five, or four.
Working in groups, students then interview the other members of the group using
the same questions and complete the table with their answers.
 When the students have all the answers, they use the results to write three
comparative and three superlative sentences about each student in their group.
 Finally, students compare their sentences and give feedback to the class on what
they found out. Examples : -- John is older than Anne.
-- John wakes
Lesson 2 up earlier than David.
-- John’s phone is more expensive than my phone.
Bali

Examples : -- David is the oldest student in my group.

-- David has the most expensive phone in my class.

Also known as the Land of the Gods, Bali appeals through its sheer natural beauty of
looming volcanoes and lush terraced rice fields that exude peace and serenity. Bali
enchants with its dramatic dances, colorful ceremonies, arts, crafts, luxurious beach
resorts, and exciting nightlife. And everywhere you will find intricately carved

There are thousands of gift shops in Bali. From Denpasar to Ubud, you'll find many
things you would like to bring back home. Most of the starred hotels are located near
the beach. Otherwise, they usually have their own private spots at certain beaches.
You can find them easily at popular spots like Kuta or Sanur. If you are thinking of
bringing home souvenirs, your best bet is the souvenir market in Sukowati Village,
where you may be overwhelmed by choices.

Bali’s white and clean beaches are favorite for family holidays. There are a variety of
watersports available, such as banana boats, parasailing or jet skiing, swimming or
plain sunbathing. Most well known among Bali’s beaches is Kuta. Along this stretch
are an array of hotels, restaurants, shops and cafes. In the evenings the area throbs
to the beat of disco music. For a quieter evening enjoy the beach at Jimbaran, a
popular spot to eat fresh barbecued seafood in the evenings. Sanur Beach also dotted
with hotels and restaurants. You can also visit Nusa Dua, where more private beaches
front super deluxe hotels. Your holiday in Bali will not only be satisfying, but also
unforgattable. (http://www.indonesia.travel/kr/en/destinations/bali-nusa-

Activity 2
Who am I?
In this fascinating activity, students will play with a set of cards containing some
made-up information that tell about themselves.
Procedures
 Divide the students into two big groups.
 As they are in their group, distribute the cards, one card for one student.
 Ask the students to be someone else and write in the card at least 6 made-up
things about the new role they are playing. The sentence must use “to be”.
(e.g. I am married; my husband is a French).
 As they finish with their cards, the two groups will exchange their cards
randomly. Each student in group A will have one card from group B, and vice
versa.
 Once they have their card, the students have to walk around the class and find
the one who is explained in their card by asking yes-no questions and using to
be. They have to keep asking until all the details written in the card are
confirmed.
 The students who have found the person in their card would need to write the
name of that person in the card and then report the findings to the class.
Examples:
- I am married
- I am afraid of cockcroach
- My father is a contract killer
- My mother is a famous singer
- My dog is so big
- My phone price is over $2,000

Who am I?
Lesson 3

none of them would be ready to go, but they need to give a reason. Can you help
them find a reason?

Exercise 4
Complete the following conversation by giving a logical reason using the present
continuous tense.
1. You: Hi Kloze, are you going to the party with me?
Kloze: Sorry, I don’t want to go out right now. Look, it is raining.
2. You: Hi Nurhaliza, are you going to the party with me?
Nurhalizah: My apologies, I think I can’t, ..........................................
3. You: Hi Leoni, are you going to the party with me?

10.You: Hi Jasmine, are you going to the party with me?
Jasmine: Thanks for inviting me, but ..........................................
Activity 3

What’s going on?

In this fun game, students will play with a game board to practice the use of the
present continuous tense.

Procedures

 Divide the students into pairs, and give each pair a copy of the game board, a
dice, and a counter.
 Students take it in turns to roll the dice and move their counter along the
board. When a student lands on a picture square, their partner asks them a
question about what is happening in the picture, e.g. 'What is the boy doing?'
The student answers the question by making a present continuous sentence,
e.g. 'He is reading a book'.
 If the student does this successfully, they stay on the square. If the student
makes a grammar mistake or can't think of what to say, they go back to their
previous square.
 The first student to reach the finish wins the game.

Lesson 4
Segara Anak Lake, Lombok

Danau Segara Anak is a volcanic lake formed in the caldera of Mount Rinjani on over
2,000 meters above sea level. The lake spans across an area of 11 square kilometers,
and reaches depths up to 230 meters. Danau Segara Anak is located on the west side
of Mount Rinjani in the village of Lawang Sembalun in Lombok, East Indonesia. The
mystifying blue color of the lake gives Segara Anak its name: The Small Ocean.

The treks from the Senaru Village, and through the crater to Danau Segara Anak take
two days and a night. It begins with a hike through a lush, tropical rainforest, and up
the mountain to the rim of the crater. The trek to the Senaru rim is a challenging
climb up steep terrain and high cliffs, but the exhaustion is completely paid off by the
breathtaking panoramic view of the sun setting over Mount Rinjani, Bali and the Gili
Isles on the horizon, and the dazzling blue waters of Segara Anak glistening hundreds
of meters below. The top of the crater is a popular camp site for both foreign and
domestic tourists on this journey to spend the night. It is advisable to set a morning
alarm so as not to miss the magnificence of dawn from atop Rinjani. From the crater’s
rim, it is a sharp descent of about 600 meters to Danau Segara Anak.

Parts of Segara Anak flow down a steep ravine forming one large waterfall and several
smaller ones. There are also four natural hot springs in the lake which are believed
to hold magical healing powers, and many people make the climb solely for medicinal
purposes.

In 1998, Danau Segara Anak was immortalized in paper money on the ten thousand
rupiah bill. (http://www.indonesia.travel/kr/en/destinations/bali-nusa-

Simple Present Dominoes

This enjoyable domino game will be a perfect way for reviewing students’
understanding about simple present tense.

Procedures

 Divide the students into pairs.

 Give a set of dominoes to each pair and ask them to divide the dominoes out
equally.
 One student starts by placing one domino in front of them, and the other
student must complete the sentence or the question by placing a domino
before or after the first domino. The student has to say the sentence correctly.
 If a student puts a domino that does not make a grammatically correct
sentence or question, they have to take both dominoes.
 If a student cannot go, they pass to the other student.
 The students will continue playing in turns until one of them has no dominoes
left. That student will be the winner.

them be as imaginative and entertaining as possible.
 Students then complete the sentence, fold the paper, and pass it to the person
on their right. This process continues until all the topics are completed.
 When they have finished, they would unfold the paper and return it to the person
whose name is at the top. Those are the prediction of their lives in 25 years.
 Get the studens reporting the predictions of their lives to the class, and let the
