About the course
The well-established and highly-successful Building Services
Engineering MSc was introduced in 1976 and has been
continuously revised to keep pace with developments in the
building services industry. The course has been awarded
the Happold Brilliant Award for teaching excellence by the
Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Building services engineering is an interdisciplinary profession.
It involves the specification, design, installation and
management of all the engineering services associated with
the built environment.
The growing complexity of engineering services in modern
buildings and the significance of energy conservation and
pollution control mean the role of the building services
engineer is increasingly important. In addition, the need to
provide an internal environment that balances the comfort
needs of the occupants with the functional requirements of
the building, using increasingly sophisticated technology,
calls for engineers with a wide range of knowledge and skills.
These include building management and controls, building
services design and management, thermofluids, refrigeration
and air-conditioning, energy conversions, acoustics, lifts and
drainage, electrical services and lighting designs. The course

(EI) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as
