Fan Blade Containment Analysis
• This jet engine fan blade containment analysis is intended to demonstrate the
capability of the ANSYS LS-DYNA product. Since we have not yet covered any
of these topics in the seminar, all that you need to do is just read in the input
file, blade.inp

• Step-by-step instructions are shown on the following slides. Your instructor

will give those details particular to your site.

• blade.inp is fully commented, so you will probably want to review this ASCII
input file after completing the course. The analysis is an example of an
implicit-to-explicit sequential solution. It takes advantage of both the speed
of the ANSYS implicit code to apply the preload (an omega loading) along with
the robustness of the LS-DYNA explicit solver to simulate the transient, which
includes a broken fan blade impacting the other fan blades as well as the
engine duct.

… Fan Blade Containment Analysis
• Start ANSYS/Multiphysics/LS-DYNA in the GUI mode

• Read in the input file “ blade.inp ”

Utility Menu > File > Read input from … > blade.inp > OK
OR issue:
/input, blade.inp

• The ANSYS implicit solution

will start automatically. The
shell thicknesses will be
visible with /ESHAPE,1 set
(as shown to the right). This
preload analysis runs very
quickly.

• The preload stresses will be then be
displayed. After a brief pause, the model
will be converted into an ANSYS LS-DYNA
model.
• At the following prompt, click on the “Yes”
button.

• The explicit analysis takes a few minutes to run. When completed, an

animation shows the equivalent stresses in the model. Several screen
captures are shown on the next slide. Note that a few of the elements
from the broken fan blade are deleted towards the end of the transient
after reaching the specified plastic failure strain.
