MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Subject/Concepts Social Studies Grade Level 2nd grade

1. Standards: (2)3.28 gather geographic information from books and pictures [NS 7.2.2]

o Observable objective: SWBAT Look up the information on the website provided.

Use the information to identify flowers, flag, animal, bird on state assignment.

Vocabulary/spelling words of geographical terms.

• Multicultural goal: Participation in an educational environment that promotes respect for

differences.” This lesson deals with difference in the flowers, birds, and maps (locational

issues), and translates to the differences in individuals and their cultures.

o Observable objective: SWBAT work in the group as well as independently, to

discover the different states and their state birds, their state flowers, and other

information for each assigned state in different regional locations.

• Auditory-Visual-Kinesthetic learning styles: Auditory: listening to the teacher describing

the elements of the lesson as well as answering questions and participating in class

discussion. Visual: looking at all the information used in the lesson, for example looking

at the pictures of the map, state bird, state flower, and the worksheets and on the internet.

Kinesthetic: Filling out the worksheets and coloring the coloring pages using fine motor

skills and dexterity with hands.

• Gardner's Intelligence: Spatial Intelligence: gives one the ability to manipulate and create

mental images in order to solve problems. The students are looking at pictures that are

two-dimensional, of the state birds, flowers, flags, and maps.


2. Materials: The worksheets. The internet and links. The coloring sheets of the state flags and

seals and crayons.

3. Instruction- learning Process:

• Do First: The class is going to learn about five states, California, Maine, Washington,

Florida, and Kansas. There are nine questions to be answered and a worksheet to fill the

answers in on. There are coloring sheets for their state flag and state seal. Each student

will color one of each. There is a ABC order spelling worksheet that the group will work

on together. They will each write out the spelling words five time per word. There is a

worksheet for that and each student will do his or her own. There is a vocabulary

worksheet that each group will work on as a group. There are three pictures of U.S. State

maps to be displayed at the front of the room. Each group will get packet with their

coloring sheets (2 each), ABC order worksheet (1 for the group), vocabulary worksheet

(1 for the group), a picture of their state map (1 per group), a picture of their state flag,

state seal, and an outline of the United States map with their state colored in (1 per

group).

• Mini-lesson: Teaching vocabulary words by introducing the words and going over their

meanings. Introduce the lesson, explain the assignments requierments, that we will be

working in groups and that eact student will be responsible for a certin portion of the

work. Assign students in five groups and their state. Demonstrate how to find the

website that will be used in lesson. Go over the sample state Nevada. Teach respect for

differences by duscussing about how the states are simular and how they are different but

that no one state is better or lesser they are all equally good and important.
Guided Practice: The groups will begin researching the assigned state using the internet to find

facts. Each student will do an assigned task, (1) look up the state flower and the state bird. (2)

look up the date it received statehood and the order it became a state. (3) the name of the state

capital and the time zone. (4) find all of the states or body of water that borders the state (5)

name the nearest body of water, and name an interesting fact about the state. As a group work

on the spelling words in ABC order worksheet.

Independent Practice: as a group look up vocabulary words. The group will do their state

presentation. Color the state flag and state seal sheets one per stuf

• Exit Slip: State fact sheet. Name one interesting fact about one of the states

5. Reflection:

This assignment challenged me in several ways. I had not previously been introduced to

Bloom’s Taxonomy or Gardner’s Intelligence. I find them both very interesting and I now see

how useful they are. I need much more experience in both of them in order to really use them

properly. The production of a lesson plan, as a teaching tool, is, also, new to me. I am glad for

the introduction to these issues and the help to understand how to produce and use these tools.
There were many varied parts of this assignment and it was challenging, but very interesting and

intellectually stimulating, for me as I learned these new issues.
