Observation Date: 16.4.19 Observation Time: 45 Min.

Teacher Observed: Musoke Ahmed Subject/Grade Level: Primary 4 (Grade 4)

School Observed: Light Academy Primary& Nursery School Observer: Ufuk Caliskan

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson?

The school provides to each teacher lesson plan book and skimming work booklet then

demanding from them before the lesson it must fill that part and carry with you the skimming

work which indicates the whole year program. When I entered class, that teacher showed me

both of them, and it was present the learning objectives and outcomes of the lesson.

Objective and outcomes;

Learn adjectives to describe places &also to use adjectives to complete sentences describing your

town. Name different things and actions on a busy street.

• Identify unsafe situations or behaviours

• Describe actions performed by different people on a busy street

• Form simple and compound sentences with sentence fragments

• Compose a paragraph about a busy street scene, using a variety of adjectives

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

Warm up (5min): The teacher began the lesson by describing and showing some words.

Introduced a simple definition of an adjective.

End of the lesson (5min): The teacher showed students the daily activities quiz presentation.

Students chose the correct answer from the list in the following way:

o The teacher selected a student and asked him/her a question.

o The student chose one of the answers.

o The rest of the class agreed or disagreed.

Then, the teacher revealed the correct answer.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

The teacher used smartboard very active during class time and showed some YouTube videos

even beginning of lesson demonstrated some charts.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, Socrative questioning, etc.)

He started with a demonstration method after sequential inquiry, cooperative learning followed.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback, etc.) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

It was formative, during the lesson he did the questioning and checkup test then he collected and

noted students oral and written work afterwards he graded students work.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher-centered, authoritative, etc.)

According to the teacher’s classroom actions, it looks student-centered, when I talked with him

also he emphasizes this point, and his approach looks instructional because everything well

planned and implemented.

7-How does the teacher manage the classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

It was good his management, students were listening to him carefully, and their participation was

also ok. He was using preventive techniques, classroom rules and regulations look established,

and students were following.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

Their attention was excellent but just a few times some students who were sitting behind got off

task and that time teacher came that side and he stood there, and students re-directed and

afterwards the teacher continued to ask some questioned to them.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

Generally, he was using verbal communication but few times also used facial communication

when some students gave the wrong answer.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc.)

Mostly they were the same nationality (Ugandan), but there were some neighbor country citizens

(Congo, South Sudan, and Rwanda). I noticed Ugandan students were more active than others

and other students’ accent were some half different I think the reason behind that it might be they

were coming from French-speaking countries, and still they are new in the country.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

The teacher was very active, and he was moving in class not just sitting on his chair. Also, he

was encouraging all students to participate and continuously was asking questions to keep
engagement. Changing methods always work for keeping engagement and questioning them

even another powerful way, including in lesson that YouTube video, gaming and rewarding also

it can help to maintain engagement.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

The instructional strategy consists of two components: the methodology and the lesson procedure

the methodology side I observed; demonstration, inquiry, cooperative learning. The lesson

procedure side I can say he started with explanation topic, and he did question answer after

showing short YouTube video then summarize. It was ok these strategies; I can prefer to apply in

my class.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

I saw a classroom rules agreement which is signed by students; it is a good idea. I want to apply

in my class. Also, when some students were making noise that time goes their side and stand

some time then asking to question them the good way, I think both of them can apply in class.
