Maps really consist of a number of layers of information.

Naturally these layers involve a layer of


information that gives the structure of the map. These combinations of layers of geography Information
can be manipulated to produce a wide range of maps which has a distinctive use .therefore maps can be
classified based on their functions as follows ;

1 thematic maps

A thematic map is a map that emphasizes a particular theme or a special topic such as the average
distribution of rainfall in an area. They are different from general reference maps because they do not
just show natural features like rivers, cities, political subdivisions and highways.

Example of thematic maps includes;

 Geological maps
 Weather/climate maps
 Roadmaps
 Physical indicator maps
 Social indicator maps
