Highly intelligent creatures, dolphins communicate with each other almost
constantly. Although dolphins do not have their own language, experiments show
that they can be taught to understand human sign language. Produced in the
dolphin’s respiratory system, high pitched whistles are used to raise alarm or
convey emotional states. Every dolphin has a unique whistle, developed early in
life. While some researchers believe that signature whistles enable individual
dolphins to their presence. Researchers have observed dolphins imitating each
others’ whistle-suggesting that these creatures may be capable of vocal learning.
Dolphins also emit a range of clicks, which emanate from the top of their head.
Not only a method of sonar communication, these clicks also play a key role in
hunting and navigation. The high-frequency clicks travel through the water and
bounce off objects. The returning echo from the sound pulses allows a dolphin to
judge the object’s distance and density with a high degree of accuracy. Scientist
remain uncertain exactly how dolphin echolation works, with one theory being
that they perceive the echo in their jaw. Bats use a similar echolation tool to
navigate
The passage suggest that dolphins and bats are similar animals
Sonar pulses allow dolphins to distinguish between the thickness of different objects
Dolphins are not the only species that use echolation to detect prey

Widely considered the world’s most illustrious prizes, The Nobel Prizes are awarded
Annually to recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry,
Physiology or medicine, literature and peace. First given in 1901, the prizes were
established in the will of Alfred Nobel, a wealthy Swedish chemist who invented
dynamite. In 1969, a new prize in economic science was established by the Bank
of Sweden. The Nobel Foundation manages the administration and finances of the
Nobel Prize, overseeing a fund valued at approximately $560 million. Since Norway’s
Independence from Sweden in 1905, the prizes’ judging, carried out by committees
of experts, has been shared between the two nations. The choice of Nobel laureates
has often been contentious. The Nobel prize for Literature, in particular has been
criticised for Eurocentric focus. The Nobel Prize cannot be awarded posthumously,
and thus some influential figures such as Mahatma Ghandi have never received the
accolade. Because the science prizes typically commend discoveries that have stood
the test of time, notable, notable scientist have failed to win because their death
preceeded recognition of their works’s importance. Another rule, which limits all but
the Peace Prize to a maximum of three people, is criticised for excluding some
contributors when a team has made a discovery.
There is often a time lag between a scientist discovery and the awarding of a Nobel Prize
Some commentators believe that the Nobel Prizes should recognize achievements posthumously
In the first four years of the Prize’s history, laureates were selected by the Swedish judging committees
Since 1969 there has been a Nobel Prize for achievements in mathematics

Q7 Which two of these statements must be true?
The Nobel Foundation has responsibility for managing the investment of Alfred Nobel’s fortune
The Nobel Prize for literature recognizes the outstanding achievements of a European writer
Alfred Nobel bequeathed his $560 million fortune to establish prizes honouring outstanding
achievements
Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, the peace prize can be won by more than three people
The Nobel Prizes for scientific disciplines never honour recently completed work
The Nobel Prize is sometimes criticized for failing to recognize the best candidates

Although sometimes used to described a style of cooking, the term molecular
gastronomy was first used in 1988 to describe the scientific study of cooking.
Pioneered by the Hungarian physicist Nicholas Kurti, a keen amateur cook, molecular
gastronomy investigates the chemical and physical changes that occur during
cooking. The discipline explores culinary transformations in three areas: social,
artistic and technical. The field differs from food science in that it focuses on home
and restaurant cooking, rather than industrial food preparation and processing.
Although molecular gastronomy is sometimes disparaged as a pseudo-science, an
understanding of scientific principles can certainly improve cooking results. For
example knowing that protein and fat react differently with air can make the
difference between a light, airy soufflé and one that fails to rise. Similarly, evaporation
can explain why the soufflé must be heated from the bottom. Not only have molecular
gastronomist appropriated lab equipment for kitchen use, they have also
experimented with the use of chemical reactions to produce certain flavours.
Molecular gastronomist have also analysed the molecular components of foods,
discovery that complimentary flavours often share an aroma molecule. This has
inspired some surprising but tasty flavour combinations, such as coffee and garlic.
Food science is a discipline that deals with home and restaurant cooking.
The term molecular gastronomy was coined by the Hungarian chef Nicholas Kurti

Q11 Which two of these statements must be true?
Home cooks can benefit from knowledge of the scientific principle behind cooking processes
A chef must have working knowledge of the chemistry and physics involved in cooking
If two flavours work well together they have an aroma molecule in common

Stress life events, whether the loss of loved one, divorce or job loss, as well as the
daily wear and tear of living, such as traffic jams and family disagreements, set off the
release of stress hormones that help our bodies charge up to meet the challenge.
During episodes of acute stress, stress hormones provide a protective function by
activating the body’s defences. However, when these same protective hormones are
produced repeatedly or in excess, because of chronic stress, they create a gradual
and steady cascade of harmful physiological changes.
High stress can lead to suppression of the immune system which leaves the stressed
person open to infection. High stress also result in bone loss, muscular weakness and
increased insulin levels that causes higher levels of fat deposits in the body, especially
around the abdomen, so much so that people can end up predisposed to heart disease.
Even the brain can be affected, as stress may accelerate changes in the brain that can
Lead to memory loss. Off all the things that can be done to lower stress levels, exercise
and prudent diet seem to be the most effective. Exercise breaks insulin resistance and
often helps to end the vicious cycles of stress-eating, over indulging in alcohol, cigratte
smoking and other unhealthy habits. However, exercise will not help everyone with
stress, and other factors must be considered. Numerous studies show that the lower
down you are on the socio-economic scale, the poorer your health. This is largely
independent of access to health care. The stress of living in poverty, or working in a low
level job that lacks autonomy, or residing in an unhealthy environment has an enormous
impact on health status

The Association of Choreographic Publishers Partnership (ACPP) is an association of
Publishers, both electronic and traditional(paper), whose goal is to increase the case
Of finding useful and timely information on choreography for the average lay person
as well as the professional. It also ensures a high standard of quality for all
participating members’ publications.
ACPP members must abide by the following Code of Practice:
Update their resource lists regularly;
Strive to be objective in all the information they present, and not exclude resource
based solely on any singular grounds(e.g personal dislike of the topic or treatment
method, monetary interest in certain resources, etc);
Be responsive to their readers’ suggestions and feedback about their publications;
Distribute to their mailing list all resources gathered through feedback;
Strive to maintain the highest standard of the respective profession in presentation and
Representation of resources available on a given topic;
Never charge a fee for viewing list;
