Character Identification Lesson plan

I. Describe the Class: Special education early intervention classroom made of

children from ages 3-5 with autism. The tables will have four students

grouped in a circle with a total of 12 students.

II. Objective(s): Students will be able to identify the characters of a story as they

appear with 80% mastery.

III. Procedures:

a. State Objectives: Today students we will be reading a story and identifying

characters as they appear.

b. Review: As before discussed the characters of a story are the people

and/or animals who are in the story.

c. Modeling: First as a class we will read, There was an Old Lady who

Swallowed a Spider Then pick out all the characters in the story as they

appear.

d. Guided Practice: Students will now work in groups to describe the

character to each other while myself and classroom assistance walking

around and coaching.

e. Independent Practice: Students will be working in a learning together

group to read a story of their choice (with assistance) and identify the

characters in the story. Filling out a sheet in which they draw the character

and give the name.

IV. Materials: Books, handout, and motivation.

V. Grouping Structures: Student will be working in the learning together groups

and completing one sheet to fill in for a grade.

VI. Modifications: Since all the students have autism myself and the assistant

teachers I have will help read the book and work with the students to complete

the task.

VII. Assessment: Students will be assessed based on participation, character

identification, and worksheet turned in.

VIII. Closer: Class will review characters of a story and order they come in.

Reteach any things that may have not been well learned. Prepare for next

lesson plan with front loading.
