Arrangement of Physical Space

Centers Defined: The centers were defined. Clear pathways were available.
Supervision of all children was available through vision. No matter where you were it
was available. The arrangement of the room also allowed children to be in quiet places
in self-regulation or a group.

Dead Space: Unavailable

Learning Materials, Equipment and Furniture

Learning Materials: The learning materials appeared age appropriate, also diverse.
The equipment was child sized, and available for self-regulated play or group play.

Furniture: Most of the furniture was aimed at the kids. They had child aimed tables,
chairs, desks and play things.

Storage of Materials and Equipment

Storage: There were differing ways of storage. For dramatic play, there were hooks
available for costumes. Storage also consisted of woven baskets or cubbies. There
were also pictures on the shelves with names of equipment. There were large wooden
blocks stacked in block area. Shelves were provided for storage if woven basket wasn’t
necessary.

Other Elements of Physical Environment

Adequate ventilation: The room was open. Door could be opened. Not sure about
windows. I didn’t see a thermostat present, didn’t mean they didn’t have one though.

Natural Light: Present, half of the classroom had natural lighting, which means the
whole class could have it available with lifting the window cover.

Diversity: The teacher had differing stations with diversity. Music area, figures, pictures
around the classroom, and book area. The music had differing music items including
maracas and rhythm sticks. The figures around had different diversities and differing
occupations. Pictures around the classroom including differing places to visit around the
world. The book area had different reads including “The Color of Us”, “Hats, Hats, Hats”,
and “Bright eyes, Brown skin”. The dramatic play area also included diverse costumes
for playing including army, medical and postal service worker.

Classroom in action: The direct play I observed or closet to directed play was the
dance and the meeting. During the meeting time Mrs. Traci read a book and after Mrs.
Charlie lead dance. The children paid attention attentively as the book was being read
to them. Some asked questions about the story at hand. Mrs. Traci also asked the
children questions about the following book at hand. The children sat and moved.
Following, Mrs. Charlie lead dance. Most children were dancing. One student, Jackson
asked me to dance with him. After I arrived over he didn’t dance. I asked him to and he
proceeded to move his body. After I returned to my seat. The kids finished dancing after
I returned.

Evaluation: I think the way the classroom is organized well. The best for its space. The
area is easy to navigate. The kids can mingle with each other, while still having time to
feel alone. One child, was using the kitchen and Jackson came over to join. Jackson
grabbed a tea set and got to do his own thing while she was in the kitchening cooking.
Another example is when I built a train set with Lorenzo. We built it in the center of the
room pretty much. One student, Carolina came over and wanted to help Lorenzo he
proceeded and declined. Another student, Jackson, decided to make a train track in
another center close by and invited me over.

Rating: I would rate the center a 5. The center was in the middle of reconstruction so
everything wasn’t present but I still feel like it deserved a 5. It had everything it needed
in a sense and felt up kept and organized. I would say they should add the family
pictures back.

Strengths & Weaknesses: The whole room. The ambience felt good and didn’t feel off
balanced. Kudos to them for that. Room arrangement was stellar, visibility fantastic,
attention to awareness easy. Good strengths. Weaknesses were having the family
pictures down. Very easy fix. Also, art level above kids eyes.

Improvements: Maybe hardwood floors in some areas. 3D painting if it’s not already
available I might not have seen it. Stronger ways to identify the areas. The areas were
harder to find until the sign identified them. Stronger or bigger sign.
