Genetic engineering is widely used in agriculture to produce disease-

resistant strong crops. It has also been used in animals as part of

scientific and medical research. The human genome could be edited
to eliminate hereditary conditions and vastly improve quality of life. It
could also be used to create a superhuman race.
Discuss the ethics around genetic engineering. Should there
be limits to its use in humans?

Nowadays, genetic engineering has been developed rapidly. A long time ago,

it was only used to develop better species of food grains and livestock but now it can

be used to produce strong crops that can resist disease and it can also be used in

human to cure some disease. However, some people argue that genetic engineering

has negative impact on human life. This essay will discuss about the reason why

there does not need to be limited.

Genetic engineering can significantly decrease the number of people suffer

from deadly disease if it is not restricted to its development and use. Many

techniques have evolved over the years to modify snippets of one's genome more

easily and with increased accuracy. The newest technique, known as CRISPR-Cas9,

allows altering larger stretches of DNA in one time. This method makes it easy to

replace, delete, or add any desired sequence of DNA. Even though older methods of

gene therapy have already been used successfully to treat conditions such as

leukemia, multiple myeloma, hemophilia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, or

Parkinson's disease, and even to confer protection against HIV. Therefore, it is

possible that all deadly disease can be cured with this use in the future. In summary,

genetic engineering can help more people to cure their disease and help people to

have a longer life expectancy.

Further than curing for a disease, genome editing could “design” a baby. With

the newest method of genetic engineering, it allows doctors to choose which of a

number of embryos created outside the human body to implant into a woman’s

womb in order to ensure that a child is born without particular undesirable genes. In

addition, couples could always have children using donor sperm or donor ova.

Similarly, individuals who are unable to produce viable gametes are able to use

donor gametes to create embryos and secure a pregnancy. In short, genome editing

can help people to have a baby as desired.

In conclusion, genetic engineering does not need to be limited because it can

help human to have a perfect baby and can lengthen human life expectancy based

on the decreases of the deadly disease. In the future, if there is no limitation to the

development of genetic engineering on human, it will help more people to get a

better life.
