The first day of my internship, I was excited and scary

at the same time, and I had no clue what to expect. My mind

will start to think of an idea of what it might be like,

asking if these people would welcome and help me to leave me

hanging. After I arrived at my internship site, the first

person I met was Matt Sigler the news director. After I

settled down and got all the paperwork done and receive the

access code for the door, he introduced me to people on the

stations section by section starting with the editing room,

sales room, master control room, and finally the studio

room. Honestly, I found that everyone was helpful and

friendly, and that made me feel a little bit calm.

This week I learned the daily operations of a

newsroom, understood the director and the producers’ work

and learned that a lottery graphics is created every day.

Also I learned about the sport graphic and bumping after

each block. It was an enjoyable learning experience for me.

I applied the knowledge that learned at Salisbury

University, which shaped my skills and thirst for knowledge.

Through out this internship, I need to comprehend

communications, media production, and broadcasting news. My

enthusiasm for this field and its capacities will impact my

future. Also, it helped me ultimately perceive what I need

to do in communications as an occupation. This internship


will comprehensively explain entry-level position and how it

reflects my desire to achieve my occupation objectives.

I found out the station gets a lot of story tips

through the phone from people. There is always a new story

happening. It goes through different people to be approved

and then the reporter and the photographer will go out to

cover it. When the story is researched, and the interview,

completed and filmed, then they will send it to the studio

to be edited and create the final script. The last step is

to send it over to the studio to be on the show.

The producer is the one approving stories scripts and

anything else that is required before the show goes live.

The producer attends during the live show to keep time, and

decides whether to skip stories or not, giving time for the

floor director to hand cue the end of the weather block and

the show. The basic cue is one minute, 30 seconds, 15

seconds, and wrap (to wrap, I have to roll my finger in the

air a couple of times and let the Meteorology see that).

I used to get confused about the concept of floating

the story, which means the story is not going to be in this

block or it can’t be use in this show because of updating

news. I was able to manage floating the story, and learned

how to know which story is next and which camera and shot

are going to be next to cue the anchor.


The producer is always updating the anchors with new

information and makes sure that the show is running

smoothly. Then after the show, everyone gathers in the

studio, and the crew and anchors talk about what mistakes

happened during the show, and what needs to be done in the

future to improve the show.

I realized after my third week that the studio

director had different roles and tasks to complete his job

before going live on the show. When I got to site, I found

the director working on multiple tasks like editing the run

down by a sign in the story and the camera shot to anchor,

creating the lottery graphic, sports graphics, weather

graphic, checking the sound for Package and SOT, or tracking

the NXT bottom on the audio board for the out side reporter.

They do all that before going live on the show to make sure

the camera shot and the sound level meds the expectation.

During my internship with WMDT 47 ABC Station, I was

able to experience a few different positions. I gained

experience as a prompter, floor director, audio board

controller, and assistant the director. I managed the

settings during the pre-recording and post-recording phases,

I handle all the sound for a show as well as managing the

communication between the floor and studio room. Until this

internship, I had not realized how important connection is


between each functional area. Without effective

communication between on and off the air, chaos could

quickly consume production both behind the scenes as well as

within the show. Before I arrived at my internship, I

believed that the employees just worked on their part of

production. Everyone very busy, rushing around getting their

tasks done. I have learned this is a fast-paced environment.

Everyone understands that all parts must keep up with the

fast pace so they must assist each other to make sure the

show is successful.

Though everyone does work quickly and focuses on

their parts of the process, everyone treats each other

respectfully and works as a team to get the job done.

Everyone treats each other like family. They even shared

that same kindness with the interns, and it made me feel

like I’m part of that family. Even though I was just intern

for short period of time. Though there were many obstacles

that I overcame and accomplishments that I am proud of from

this internship, there were some obstacles that made me mad

at myself. I felt like I could have asked more questions and

that I have done more.

One area I wish I had been able to experience was how

to direct the show or work with a reporter to film outside

of the studio. I would have also liked to learn how to lay


down the footage and convert it into news clips, asking or

show me the master control role. I was not able to

experience that, but that I wanted to do. This field of work

is fascinating to me. The fast-paced variety of work can be

exciting and unpredictable. I am very thankful for the

opportunity to learn from my mentors. I appreciated learning

from the associates of WMDT 47 ABC station. They made me

feel like one of them. I will continue to learn and use the

experiences and skills I have obtained in my internship for

future endeavors.

Working as a studio technician is fun, but the

most challenging part, working on the audio board. It had a

lot of multi-Tasking. It's way more difficult at the

beginning. I had to pay very carefully to audio levels. The

fundamental lesson John Henry repeated to my as many time is

muting the microphones after the anchor finished his

reading, And when the playing the Package or the Sot for the

voice over, or unmuting the anchor when is back on the

screen, to do that I have to keep up with rundown. My second

struggling on the audio board when the people talk on the

newsroom some time I can't hear the director order I just

used my sense to unmute the microphone.

Managing the audio board overall is not hard if you know

which anchor has which microphone. Each anchor has colors in


his Microphone. For example, the news anchor has a red and

green microphone. The sports anchor has a blue microphone.

And the meteorologist has a yellow microphone other have

gust microphone with pink and orange colors. I apply the

color the each anchor and that make it easy form me to

handle it. Also I manage the Facebook Live and music bottom

for the show.

The other challenging working as the prompter is not

hard but need to be focusing and awake to keep up the flow,

sometimes I need to Paced the prompter fast and sometimes

slowly during the live show to meet the anchor speed

reading, Sport section is the hardest block because the

anchor talks a lot, skips ahead of the script. On Friday on

11 pm the whole show is sport except for one black is news,

they having a show called (DSI) Delmarva Sports Insider,

This show throws me off and makes me nervous, anchors stop

reading from a script and talking their word have a

different conversation. That makes wondering if the anchor

going to read from where he stops or he going to read the

next story. I had to focus very carefully to make sure I

matched with his reading.

What surprises me many times reporters have to go out in the

bad weather in middle of the night to get the news for the
viewer. But still, they have to come to work the next

morning and it may do the same.

Doing my internship with DMDT 47 ABC.I was able me

to see things clearly from many different perspectives. I

gained a lot of experience in the media production field.

Working in a very dynamic industry like media production

helped me a lot in understanding how media and technology

ride together as they rely on each other in many different

ways. I enjoyed working under the news department

supervision. Actions and News never stop, dealing with News

that came from many sources and trying to create the best

frame that can hold the story and make it acceptable and

understandable to the audience without making any changes on

the News was an exciting part in my internship.

The coming News should follow a very restrict process before

publishing. For example, filtering the News and making sure

the stories are correct and hold truth by verifying the

source, and then delivering the stories to the studio filmed

stories and making sure they are in the best format. As I

said earlier the News the industry is a very dynamic field,

and in many times things change quickly without any prior

notification, and we had to deal with it, by dealing with

these situations I gained a lot of experience and learned

how to act promptly and make quick reactions in no time.


One of the things that I gained during my time with DMDT 47

is building solid relationships with Co-workers, and by

sharing my thoughts and ideas; I was willing to maintain a

vast social network. That helped me to learn and adapt

quickly to the work environment.

Honestly, when I started my internship with DMDT 47

ABC, I was wondering how I can make myself comfortable and

how I can provide the most during work. I was much stressed

the first time I joined the team, but after a while, I was

willing to make myself comfortable and adopt the new

environment. My team was accommodating as they provided me

so much knowledge that helped me meet the requirements for

the different tasks. I was very proud of myself for this

internship; I considered the first step to achieving my

goal. On my last day of the internship I was exciting and

very happy to make it to this point. I learned from my

internship every one on the studio can make a mistake but

you have to fix it right away and move on before even the

viewer noticed. I made some mistakes during my internship

that were fixable, and I learned from my mistakes.

This internship helped me understand the News and the

Media Production industry in many different ways; I had the

chance to improve my communication skills, people skills,

and time management skills.
