Introduction

"The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read"

The main reasons of low literacy rate are poverty, lack of interest or awareness, lack of facilities
and many others. The people who cannot afford school expenses like fees, uniforms, books and
transport problem remain uneducated and illeterate. And these all reasons are relating with
each other in which main reason is poverty. We are going to point out the main reason of low
literacy rate. Poverty is basically the main reason of low literacy rate.

Literacy is very effective and important parameter of measuring social development of a

society.

Background of the study

From the very start education was not so expensive. Religious education was more dominant or
preferred in the society.Religious education was enough for them to move in the society. The
people of that time have no financial problems. At that time the education was very low cost,
but it will be not wrong if we say that the education of past time was costless. But in modern
Era education is very expensive. Our poor people are unable to afford to get higher education
to meet the success in their life. As we know that it's a modern Era, we can only be successful if
we will follow the recent education system. The people of Pakistan or our society are ignorant
and they have no understanding that education means a lot for their bright future. Our
government has not set such educational programs that can develop awareness in people
about importance of education.The main reason for choosing this topic is to analyze the
problems of low literacy rate of Pakistan. The research is on the core issues related to the low
literacy rate. Pakistan has not beenable to uplift literacy rate even after claiming to have
education in the priority list. Low literacy seems to be root cause of all other ills of the society
that have risen to the scene in the lastdecade. One of them may include intolerance and lack of
awareness for human rights among the masses of the nation. The study is about the root cause
of the mother of the problems. The basic purpose will be to highlight the factor that are
providing a recessive and resistive force to the development of a sound education system which
may be able to attract more and more population towards education

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The study aim was to find the causes of low literacy rate. And to know that why people cannot
meet with the higher studies to polish their lives.

1.3 Research Objectives

Objectives of the study were

1. To show that Literacy is among the major antidotes for poverty.

2. To realize that Literacy makes your life better.
3. To understand that Literate people have more choices in their work and personal lives,
leading to greater freedom.

1.4 Research questions

1. In your opinion what are the major reasons of low literacy rate in Sargodha?
2. What steps should be taken to improve the literacy rate?
3. How can literacy makes your better?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study may be helpful for the people of Pakistan (Sargodha)to find out the effect of low literacy
rate by keeping in view the four dimensions such as gender inequality, lack of resources, lack of
awareness and poverty. Future researchers will be guided by the following studies. People will be
able to find out the problems and will make their lives better according to their education level.
The basic purpose will be to highlight the factor that are providing a recessive and resistive force
to the development of a sound education system which may be able to attract more and more

1.6 scope and limitations of the study

The focus of this research work was to primarily study the influence of poverty, lack of
awareness, economical issues and governments mismanagement on the low literacy rate of
Pakistan(Sargodha).the study is based on teachers of high schools of Sargodha tehsil and district
only .
1.7 delimitation of the study
The study is delimited to district Sargodha of province Punjab. Among of all the high schools of
district and tehsil Sargodha future it is delimited to government girls high school 142 SB
Sargodha. My study is delimited to the elementary school of GGHS 142 SB Sargodha .The
study was conducted only on high schools including elementary sections separately due to lack
of resources and shortage of time.
1.8 Research Methodology
Following procedures were adopted .

1.8.1 Population

Population are the high schools of Sargodha tehsil and district only .

1.8.2 Sampling Technique

The closed ended questionnaire technique was used to determine the

low literacy rate in this study. Closed ended technique is more helpful than open ended
questionnaire technique .

1.8.3 Sample
The sample consist of 100 students and teachers from 10 high schools of Sargodha
tehsil and district only. The data is collected from the high schools of Sargodha .The sample size
in this research is 100.

1.8.4 Research Instruments

A questionnaire was prepared for the teachers of high schools to collect

data.

1.8.5 Data Collection

Data was collected by visiting high schools and fulfilled questionnaire form
teachers and students.

1.8.6 Data Analysis

Data was analyzed by applying the percentage formula.

1.9 Operational Definitions

As we know that a single word has more than one meaning in different
contexts, the following definitions are given as the word used as in tended to be understood for
the purpose of this study.

 Illiteracy
The term illiteracy means being to unable to read and write .A person who has limited
and low literacy rate is not illeterate .
 Lack of Awareness
The lack of awareness means as the failure to be alert ,vigilant or observant in the
surrounding or in the job itself. such incidents can lead to the failure to recognize the
consequences of an action.
 Gender Inequality

Gender inequality acknowledges that men are women are not equal and that gender
affects an individual’s lived experience .These differences arises from distinctions in
biology ,psychology and culture norms .
 Economic Issues
The economic problems sometimes called basic or central economic problem—asserts that
an economy’s finite resources are insufficient to satisfy all human wants and needs .
