Dear Triscuit Team/Mondelēz International,

Our names are Mary Caroline Nelson, Elisabeth Peeler, and Drew Adams. We are
freshmen at Austin High School in Austin, Texas with the Academy for Global Studies. In our
geometry class, we were assigned a project called the “Packaging Efficiency Project” in which
we were assigned to redesign the packaging of any tangible product to make its packaging
better for the environment, more functional, more recyclable, etc. We have always loved
Triscuits and thought that it would be cool to redesign the packaging of one of our favorite
snacks. We are writing this letter to you with the hope of respectfully suggesting alterations to
the packaging. Our goal of this product is to create less air space in our new prototype,
therefore wasting less of the packaging material per each box. Our new design still has all of the
essential aspects that the original packaging had like the nutrition facts, the triscuit logo, the
picture of the crackers and more, but just on a shorter package with less wasted airspace and
material.
This project took a lot of attentive, detailed work in order to make our calculations as
accurate as possible. We started the project by measuring the dimensions of the original
packaging and the contents inside of the box. The original box had a surface area of 1,997.74
centimeters squared. Our new prototype has a surface area of 676.5 centimeters squared
meaning we reduced the surface area of the packaging by 1,321.24 centimeters squared. To
get this new surface area, we shortened the height of the packaging that was taken up by
unused airspace. With our new prototype, the is little airspace at the top and the crackers in the
plastic fit almost perfectly in the box. The wasted airspace of the original packaging is 609.375
centimeters squared. The wasted airspace of the new prototype is 81.25 centimeters squared.
The original package had 38% of wasted airspace. The new prototype has 13% of wasted
airspace. In order to create our new prototype, we created a net drawing of the what the new
box would look like with it’s new dimensions. Then we took the original box and cut it different
ways in order to achieve the look and size of the new box. Our new prototype reduced the
wasted airspace by 25%. We created the new prototype and then took the cracker product and
put it in the new prototype to see if it would fit. It did fit, almost perfectly. We are writing this letter
to you hoping that you will consider our new prototype that will eliminate a large percentage of
unused airspace in the packaging.
We hope that you will take into consideration our hard work for this project. Not only will
our new box be efficient and functional, it will have an aesthetically pleasing look that catches
the consumers eye. Our adjustments to the packaging will also help the environment by wasting
less cardboard per box. Not only is it good to help the environment, but is also a great selling
point to customers. We really appreciate you taking time out of your day to read this letter and
learn about our product that we worked so hard on.

Sincerely,
