1. Name a Public Service Broadcaster – Channel 4


2. What is PSB? (200 Words) – PSB stands for Public Service Broadcaster and is a broadcasting
service that is showed to the public and it broadcast shows all day long and It also has commercial
means like some broadcasters are required by Ofcom to ensure certain requirements are made in
order for the broadcaster to keep their broadcasting license and not have it removed. For example the
BBC one of the biggest and most funded TV license fees that we pay is notable for being the first ever
PSB in the uk as it was launched on the first of January 1927 and had the directing hand of John
Reith, however the first commercial was not broadcasted until ITV did it in 1955 after the Television
Act 194 was passed to break down the dominance the BBC who held a huge presence over TV
broadcasting at the time.
3. What are the debates on whether PSB is relevant today? (100 Words) – there is still a lot of debates
going around about PSB like why there still relevant today and there is a lot of points that show that its
outdated and I can agree with this as people now a days are using there phones and laptops a lot
more that just watching TV, for example I personally use my laptop to watch Netflix as its on demand
unlike the BBC and many more and I find it a lot easier to do.
4. Identify 3 Commercial Broadcasters. How do they obtain their revenue compared to the BBC? What
debates recently have there been about Product Placement on Commercial Television? (100 Words)
1. Channel 4
Channel 4 is self-funded and gets most of its money from advertising paying
them to have their adverts appear on their platform ,channel 4 started out by
making money by getting ITV to pay for the rights to advertising in their region
as it was only the forth channel on analog TV however now channel 4 pays for
itself and is still selling advertising space ,sponsorships and merchandise.

ITV gets all its money from Tv by advertising revenue and is a very lucrative
market as it is one of the largest share in the UK for adverting market

6. What is a Multi-national Media Conglomerate and give 4 examples. Name 5 well known
organizations/companies that they own. (100 Words)
A multinational conglomerate is the collection of 2 or more companies that are working on
businesses that all come under the same roof of corporate group and is quite common for a
conglomerate to cover a range of multiple different industries making it a multi industry company a
conglomerate usually have a headquarters in one country and have company’s spread out like the
BBC as they have company’s like BBC Foyle in Northern Ireland.
An example of this would be Sony/Comcast/Time Warner and Walt Disney as they all own Universal
studios ,Sony Pictures, Marvel Comics and DC Comics and many many more.
7. What is the difference between a Monopoly and an Oligopoly with examples? (100 Words)
The difference between a Monopoly and Oligopoly is that a monopoly owns most of all the marketing
for a specific product or service a good example of this would be the media marketing company Fox
And Sony, a Oligopoly is similar to a monopoly but the difference is being that rather than have one
company own the majority of the market and it is 2 or more companies together dominating the
market for example US Walt Disney Picture, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures
and Warner Bros Entertainmentare an oligopoly that owns 87% of what is made in American films
revenues.
8. What is the difference between Vertical and Horizontal integration, with examples? (100 Words)
Horizontal integration is a term often used for a situation where 2 companies in the same industry
merge themselves together for example Facebook a well-known platform acquisition Instagram.
vertical integration on the other side is a situation where 2 companies merge when the acquiring
company acquires a company that operates before or after them in production process for example
Virgin ,AT&T and Verizon
9. What is an Independent Production Company and give 3 examples? Name 4 TV programmes that

a independent production is a company that creates shows or movies that will be mostly or completely
outside major film studios and are created by independent studions for example
