INTRO (10 min)
Today, we will be learning about Listening and Politeness. Can anyone tell me what they know about listening?
*receives answers from kinders*
Great answers! Listening is paying attention someone or something..
It is important to know is that listening is not just with your ears, but with your entire body. When someone else is talking, you use your eyes to look at the person talking, you use your mouth by remaining quiet, you have quiet hands and feet, and your entire body is turned towards the person you are listening to.
Listening is important to friendships because it helps strengthen your communication and relationships with other people by showing them interests, care, respect, and understanding.
Today, we will also be learning about politeness. Can anyone tell me what they know about politeness?
*receives answers from kinders*
Great answers! Politeness is showing good manners towards others.
You can show politeness through your speech and behavior towards others and yourself. Being polite is saying “please” and “thank you” to others, opening the door for others, and even cleaning up after yourself. Can anyone else give me an example of being polite?
*receives answers from kinders*
Politeness is important because when you are polite to other people, you are making them feel respected. And when they feel respected, they feel appreciated and cared for as a person. Also, others will know that you are empathetic and don’t just care about your own needs but their needs as well.
INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY (5 min)
TELEPHONE: Today, we are going to play a game of telephone! So first, let’s form a big circle! Everyone, please stand up and hold hands with the person right next to you so we can form a circle! Perfect, now you can all sit down. Okay so one person is going to whisper a word or phrase into the ear of the person sitting on their right. Then that person will continue to whisper that phrase to their neighbor until it reaches the last person. Then the last person will say out loud what their neighbor told them, and the first person will reveal what they said in the beginning.
It is very important that you whisper the phrase to your neighbor, so it is kept a secret.
Post Game Questions: Can anyone tell me what they learned from playing this game? - Importance of using your listening skills to hear what people are really saying - Gossip and rumors should not be believed or spread because it probably is not true, it is not polite and it can hurt others feelings - Importance of getting information from the original source
CRAFT (10 min)
To end our program, we will be creating a class friendship tree!! Each of you will be receiving a green square of paper, where you will be tracing your hand on it! On your leaf, you will be writing your name on the palm of the leaf and you can decorate to show what friendship means to you. You can add hearts or even a picture of you and your friends. Then you will cut out your hand and give it to me.
