Who am I
• Peter Bessems
• Birth year was 1957
• Living in a small village in the south of the
Netherlands
• Started teaching youngsters in the age 12 -16
• Became a sailing /cardio fitness instructor to sport
students in the age 16 – 22 for 12 years.
• 20 years ago I started as an IT teacher and now I am
a certified Cybersecurity Specialist.
• I am using the Cisco Networking Academy
curriculum.
• In the IT you have continuously upgrade your
knowledge
• I now participate in de CyberOps course every week
• When I am not studying my hobbies are Making

Music
• Field Hockey trainer of several teams
• The rest of my time I spent with my lovely family.

Tips when you use recorded sessions
• Students need to watch videos at home
• Don't use class time to repeat what was in the video – but
use the time to reinforce what they watched.
• Many things can explained better in video: If a picture is worth a thousand
words, how much is a video worth?
• Don't just regurgitate the text (online curriculum) (death by PowerPoint) - Teach!
Explain! Make it make sense!
• Keep it active (draw, animate, point, …)
• Do a run through first so it sounds more natural (I didn't have time to this)
• Occasionally show the presenter - Remind the listener there is a trusted person
presenting
• Include animations and drawings – make it interactive
• Change it up – different techniques for what works best
• Add interviews with real world network engineers, experts, etc
• Don't just record the book or online curriculum – not just a book on tape

Sometimes a quick sketch explains an idea better than words.
White board or draw on your phone or any device, and share the
interactive drawing in chat. Keep iterating whether or not you’re
in a live meeting.
The results
• With one of the highest completion rates I have ever had

• With higher student test scores than the average
• Student satisfaction very high
• One of the most enjoyable classes I have taught
• Instead of repeating information from a PowerPoint with
comparatively few off-script instruction…
• … able to engage with students on a deeper level.
• More fun for both the students and me
