Could Have Been

All they do is fantasize. There world had been completely taken over. All there
homes were invaded and a new ruler took the kingdom. They always heard stories
about ‘the one's just beyond the valley’ but never imagined they would be real. Once
they invaded the kingdom there was no chance of ever getting it back. They were small,
but there were so many. All they do is fantasize, of what a world without such horrid
creatures would be like.

Poof
Vincenty-Cole2

Just a point and...poof. He couldn’t believe it. All lancelot ever wanted was
magic, but he never imagined what price he would have to pay. He wished to be like the
other kids, new magic, and unlimited powers. But, what he did realize was all magic
comes with a price, and this price just so happened to be his family. Who he never saw
again.

Beast
Vincenty-Cole3

It was just like any other day in the small village: kids roaming, playing games all
while their parents take care of the animals and garden. During the day, everything in
the village seems fine. Everyone is neighborly and all the kids play together very well,
but at night it's like a whole new side of them. Children become confused and parents
go mad with fear. There was this myth, or a story rather, that kids were told as bedtime
stories about these creatures who lived deep in the valley. This thing is a beast-not one
of those friendly giants you hear about either. No one dare goes beyond the hill, for they
don't actually know what to expect.
Every so often you’ll hear ear piercing yells and feel the earth shake beneath
your feet. As soon as that happens, you know the beast is coming. The village didn't
always live in fear, for there used to be endless land and thrilling adventures beyond the
hill. Once a man left to explore and never returned, and the screams from the beast
confirmed that the land was no longer ours. The villagers didn't know what to do, for
they were much too small to take it on, even in large numbers, they feared they could all
be crushed with a single stomp of a foot.
Most kids think it's just another story they hear, so everyday they get a little
closer and closer to adventuring beyond the hill to see just how big and scary this
creature was. Parents panicked for they could see the hunger of adventure in their
children’s eyes, but couldn’t bare to lose them in such horrid way. They all try to play it
off and keep them distracted, hoping they’ll forget about it, until one day…..they finally
got away.
Fortunately these kids were smarter than the average Joe, and they tried to
prepare for as much as they could. They took their parents weapons, stole food from
their gardens, and packed fresh water from the watering hole right before they left. They
met behind a giant old wicker tree, as they do everyday to play. They knew their parents
wouldn't think anything of it, so now all they had to do was leave, as soon as their
families stopped watching them. They had only one opportunity, and that is when their
parents head inside to start preparing for dinner. One by one they enter their house and
once the last one is inside they turn and bolt for the hill. They heard the stories so many
times that they turned into words that encouraged them to explore instead of fill them
with fear. They were just children, who wanted to meet this ‘mighty beast’.
By the time they make it over the hill it's almost completely dark; they could
barely see their own hands when they held them out in front of them. This also happens
to be the time that the beast awakens, to go hunting for food. The children are almost to
the valley, when they feel the ground began to shake beneath their feet. They stop in
their tracks, completely paralyzed by fear. Everything they heard in the stories has
come to life. There greatest fear would walk right before them.
Deep in the crevases of the valley, the beast emerges. He stood what seemed
like 100 feet tall to the children and dark green in color. He had beady yellow eyes, that
could be seen from a mile away. His teeth were so big they barely fit in his mouth, but
Vincenty-Cole4

were deadly sharp. The beast begins to move and the children scream with terror,
which caused the beast to notice them. He was enraged that more humans were
trespassing on his land and with only two strides he snatched the children in his hand.
He pulls them up to his bright yellow eyes to see them, and the children scream as loud
as their little bodies allow. The beast retaliates with rage, covering their screams with
his own mighty roar. They are covered in saliva and only inches away from his sharp
oversized teeth. The beast shakes them in his hand while licking his plump chapped
lips. Then with one fellow swoop, the children were gone. The beast returned to his
home, ready to return to sleep. As for the children, they were never seen again.

Consumption
The stone broke open and black evil poured out. Everything it touched melted
and became one with the evil. It tore through towns and nothing could slow it down. It
caused everyone to panic, and started encouraging people to flee. All except one. Her
name was Amelia. She was the head of the kingdoms army. She’ became the King’s
right hand man; everyone looked up to her. When everyone was consumed with fear
she would step up and save the day. Nothing scared her, and nothing could ever defeat
her.
What the people of Star City didn't realize, was her magic. She carried a mighty
sword that held the lightest magic of them all. Pure energy and power was carried
throughout that sword and it has become the source of Amelia’s abilities. She has
hidden it from the townspeople, and even her own kingdom, because if they knew, they
would want their own kind of magic. That would be too dangerous. Having that kind of
magic just floating through people’s hands could lead to the destruction of everything
right before them.
The black evil made it to the walls of the kingdom, and Amelia knew of only one
option that would save the kingdom, but it would cost her, her life. Was it something she
would be willing to give up, in order to save hundreds of others? Would she risk losing
her magic and everything she’s worked so hard for in order to save a village? Of course.
There wasn't ever a single doubt in her mind. She was born for this, and this is what she
wants to do. Although, she knew that if she told anyone about what it would take in
order to defeat the black evil, they would stop her. She had no time to spare, and she
wouldn’t let anyone else try to risk their lives in order to spare her. This was her lifelong
duty, and her hard work is finally paying off.
She grabs her sword and runs out of the castle. The black evil has began to
break down the walls, and it's seeping through the cracks. All the kingdom's people
have taken shelter in the castle, for there wasn't anything left, and nowhere else to go.
She pulls out he sword, and it glows with bright white magic. The people all watch, and
gasp once they see the sword. Amelia never wanted them to find out; especially this
way, but after she defeat the black evil, it wouldn't matter. In order to defeat the black
evil the purest magic had to be sacrificed. The would mean Amelia. She charged at the
evil, climbing the wall until she made it to the top. She must get in the middle of it in
order for it to work. How was that even possible, for the black evil is so massive and has
swallowed a whole town. She wasn’t sure it would work, but with her beliefs, it powered
her magic. She was the strongest shes ever been. She leaps into the air, swings her
sword up into the air and slashes it down in the evil. This bright light takes over: so
bright that for a few moments it seemed the world disappeared. And then….poof. The
towns peoples sight came back. The black evil was gone. They cheered and cried with
Vincenty-Cole6

joy, until they didn't. They all out once realized that Amelia was gone. Just like that, and
she wouldn’t ever been seen again.

Uncivilized
“How uncivilized,” The king said.
“Father please, I love him!” Melissa yelled.
“You WHAT?!” The king exclaimed. “Off with his head!”
Melissa cries, and everyone in the crowd gasps while covering their eyes.
There was only one rule in the kingdom, no magic. Not in any shape, way, or
form. It is new and unknown. The king told his people they should be afraid, and stay
away from such a powerful thing. The kingdom looked at magic as a dangerous
weapon, not the beautiful thing that it is. Unlike the rest of the kingdom, Melissa saw all
the glorious things that magic was capable of. Scott was the one that showed her. She
Vincenty-Cole7

knew that being in love with someone like Scott would cause problems in her kingdom,
but she didn’t care, for she was in love. Scott could do things that no other person she
has met could do. He used his magic for good: to heal the earth. He never believed in
using magic to hurt others, or anything for that matter.
They take care of his body, and Melissa just stands there, in total shock. She
couldn’t believe her father was capable of such a thing. Eventually everyone leaves, not
quite understanding what he was being punished for. The king didn't want to announce
to everyone there the was magic around for all this time. He feared they would question
his judgment on it's abilities. They decided to inform everyone a few days later. They
said he was a common thief that tried to steal from the castle. The towns people ate
every single word, without any doubt. Melissa on the other hand, never recovered. She
was determined to keep Scott’s memory alive, so she tried to learn magic for herself.
She feared what her father would do to her if he ever learned what she was doing, but it
was too soon after Scott’s death too care.
The kind of magic that Scott had wasn't from any sword or wand. It came from
within him. He was born with it. Melissa had no clue how she would ever find magic, but
one thing she would never forget it to believe.
“Anything is possible, if you believe Mel,” Scott would always say.
“Anything is possible…” She runs through the town and into the forest. The only
place she knew any kind of magic would be safe. At first she had no clue what to do, or
where to go. Then, she remember this place Scott would always take her, where his
magic was always his strongest. It was deep in the forest, almost completely tucked
away. This giant oak tree casted such a large shadow it almost always looked like it was
night time. That's what made his magic so beautiful, you could see all the good
intentions and light inside of it. Melissa laid against the tree and tries to feels it's power:
feel the energy that the tree holds. Hours pass by and she thinks she finally feels
something. She stands, breathing heavily, heart racing. She opens her hands and looks
up. She stands there for a few moments and….nothing.

She quickly grows angry, and realizes that it's impossible. Scott didn't find magic,
he was born with it.
“There isn't anyway im going to find magic,” She thought.
Melissa was angry, and disappointed in herself. She thought of Scott, and began
to cry. She wanted to do something for him, one simple thing. But what she didn't
realize was that it wasn't a simple thing. Then, she paused. Took a deep breath and
picked up a flower that was growing by the tree. She closes her hand and lays her head
back. She continues to breathe deeply but this time, she thought of Scott. How much
love she had for him, and much love he had for her. Within moments she felt the flower
growing in her hands. This bright glow peaked through her fingers and her face light up.
She couldn’t believe it was happening. She had magic. Then she realized she's always
Vincenty-Cole8

had magic, she just couldn’t see it. But Scott always could, and that was why there love
was so strong. He believed in her even when she didn't believe in herself.
“Anything’s possible..” She whispers while pulling the flower to her face to smell.
“I you just believe..”
