Chemistry is a subject that helps me understand the things around me – composition, structure, properties and change of matter. As one of the student mentors assigned to tackle about atoms, elements, and matter, I was very glad to discuss some basic properties of those topics knowing that I started with a basic understanding, but throughout the week, I soon began to understand the ideas and topics in depth. I have learned so much about the isotopes of elements which I was very confused about when I was in Junior High School; that they are atoms with the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons. We also reviewed the solution in getting the number of neutron (which is mass number-number of proton), number of proton and electron (which are both equal), distinguishing some important parts of the periodic table of elements (the group which is grouped vertically, period which is grouped horizontally, the metals, metalloids, and nonmetals). The classifications of matter were also discussed; the topic which was assigned to me. Every after a discussion, there was an activity to assess our understanding about the topic and fortunately, we all got high scores. Throughout the week, the discussion went well and it was really fun. We have learned a lot and I am expecting that we will learn a lot more when the topics will be finally discussed by our Teacher because surely, everything will be taught thoroughly and accurately. Overall, the best learning I got aside from knowing important things about chemistry, is that it’s really a difficult job to teach but as long as you see that everyone is understanding your lesson and getting high scores in quiz, everything probably is being paid off.
