ASSIGNMENT-02

Submit on or before 04-September-2018 Course Instructor: S. Sekhar Mallick

1. Air in a spring loaded setup has a pressure that is linear with volume, P=A+BV. With an initial state of P=P1
kPa, V=V1 L and a final state of P2 kPa and volume V2 L. Find the work done by the air.

2. A balloon behaves so the pressure is P=C*V2/3 , C= 100 kPa/m. The balloon is blown up with air from a starting
volume of V1 m3 to a volume of V2 m3. Find the final mass of the air, assuming it is at T2 0C, and the work done by
the air.

3. A Piston cylinder arrangement contains CO2 at P1 kPa and T1 0C with a volume of V1 m3. Weights are added
to the piston such that the gas compresses according to the relation PV1.3= Constant to a final temperature of T2
0C. Determine the work done during the process.

4. Consider a two part process with an expansion from V1 to V2 m3 at a constant pressure from P kPa followed
by an expansion from V2 to V3 m3 with a linearly rising pressure from P kPa ending at P3 kPa. Show the process
in a P-V diagram and find the boundary work.

5. A vertical cylinder with a freely floating piston contains m kg air at P bar and a small electrical resistor. The
resistor is wired to an external V volt battery. When a current of I amps is passed through the resistor for t secs,
the piston sweeps a volume of 0.01 m3. Assume piston and the cylinder are insulated and air behaves as an ideal
gas with Cv=700 J/kgK. Find the rise in temperature of air.

6. A football was inflated to a gauge pressure of P1 bar when the ambient temperature was 15 0C. When the
game started next day, the air temperature at the stadium was 5 0C. Assume that the volume of the football
remains constant at V cm3. Find the amount of heat lost by the air in the football and the gauge pressure of air
in the football at the stadium.

7. Steam enters a turbine at P1 bar, 300 0C (u=2750 kJ/kg, h=2993 kJ/kg) and exits the turbine as saturated
liquid at P2 kPa (u=225 kJ/kg, h=226 kJ/kg). Heat loss to the surrounding is Q kj/kg of steam flowing through the
turbine. Neglecting changes in Kinetic energy and potential energy, Find the work output of the turbine(in
kJ/kg of steam)

8. The temperature and pressure of air in a large reservoir are 400 K and 3 bar respectively. A converging -
diverging nozzle of exit are Ae m2 is fitted to the wall of the reservoir. The static pressure of the air at the exit
section for adiabatic flow through the nozzle is Pe kPa. Find the mass flow rate of air through the nozzle in kg/s.
