TEST 1 (2 HOURS)

QUESTION 1 (10 Marks) – CO1

The acceleration of a particle is defined by the relation 𝑎𝑎 = 3𝑒𝑒 −0.2𝑡𝑡 , where 𝑎𝑎 and 𝑡𝑡 are expressed in ft/s2
and seconds, respectively. Knowing that 𝑥𝑥 = 0 and 𝑣𝑣 = 0 at 𝑡𝑡 = 0, determine the velocity and position of
the particle when 𝑡𝑡 = 0.5 s.

QUESTION 2 (10 Marks) – CO2

A ball is thrown so that the motion is defined by the equations 𝑥𝑥 = 5𝑡𝑡 and 𝑦𝑦 = 2 + 6𝑡𝑡 − 4.9𝑡𝑡 2 , where 𝑥𝑥
and 𝑦𝑦 are expressed in meters and 𝑡𝑡 is expressed in seconds. Determine:

(a) the velocity at 𝑡𝑡 = 1 s (5 Marks)

(b) the horizontal distance the ball travels before hitting the ground. (5 Marks)

QUESTION 3 (10 Marks) – CO3

Two smooth billiard balls A and B each have a mass of 0.2 kg. If A strikes B with a velocity of (𝑣𝑣𝐴𝐴 )1 =
1.5 m/s as shown, determine their final velocities just after a collision. Ball B is originally at rest and the
coefficient of restitution is 𝑒𝑒 = 0.85. Neglect the size of each ball.
