Lesson Plan 1 – Year 8 Drama Theatresports

Monday 27/6 Period 5 (Drama B)


Period 6 (Drama A)
Aim

To introduce students to Theatresports, develop improvisation skills and help students to


understand how the Theatresport challenge will run.

Outcomes

- Students develop improvisation skills.


- Team building.
- Understanding Theatresports.

Lesson Content

 (5mins) Discussion - What is improvisation?


- What are Theatresports?
 (5min) Examples such as ‘Thank god you’re here” shown and info sheet handed out.
What they will learn from the unit.
 (5min) Explanation of how the Theatresport challenge will work.
 (30mins) Working on Theatresport games that will be used next lesson in the
Theatresport Challenge.
- Death in a minute
- Slow motion commentary
- Human prop
- Subtitle
- Emotional replay
- Stunt Doubles
 (If time) A game will be played to get them into groups. Encourage students to come
next lesson with a team name/chant/colours etc. (Groups of 3 – 5 people).

Wednesday 29/6 Periods 3 and 4 (Drama B)


Friday 1/7 Periods 1 and 2 (Drama A)

Aim

To complete the Theatresports challenge.

Outcomes

- Learn to think spontaneously.


- Adapt to situations and problem solve
- Create a range of characters and use a variety of voice and facial expressions.
- Perform to an audience.

Lesson content

 (5min) Discussion – what will happen this lesson - Warm up and Theatresport
challenge.
 (5min) Warm up – physical focus and voice.
- Physical – Walking around the space, shoulder rolls, stretching
neck etc.
- Focus – 21
- Voice – walking round the space humming. Stand neutrally,
sounds – ‘ma’ ‘ta’, trills, and sirens.
 (15 min) Recap of some of the Theatresport games for challenge. Students get into
groups (either from last lesson or from a game). Game – walking around the space
then asked to find a group of 4– 5 people and make a poster for the Theatresports
challenge. These then become their groups for the challenge.
 (1 hour 10min) Theatresport challenge played. Groups perform.
- Groups of 3 – 5.
- Up to 4 rounds all timed (1 – 3 mins). Each team will have 5
seconds to prepare before the scene begins. Timekeeper will
ring a bell when the scene has 20 seconds remaining. Players
must find an ending to the scene.
- Two choices in each round – groups decide which one they will
play. Audience will pick the suggestion (e.g. Location, what
they are doing).
- Round 1 Death in a minute or slow motions commentary
(1min).
- Round 2 Human Prop or Subtitle (2min).
- Round 3 Emotional replay (30 second scene replayed 3
different times) or Stunt doubles (2min)
- Round 4 (bonus round) Sing about it, Opera, Ballet. All games
they have not practiced for (3min).
- Scored out of five based on technique, narrative and
entertainment
 (5min) Scores added up and one team awarded the champions for the 2016
Theatresport challenge.
