Udak observed that there are around 5,00,000 fatalities which are caused every

year from water-related diseases in India.

We know that, waterborne infections are caused by pathogenic microorganisms which are
usually transmitted in contaminated, fresh water. Water contamination causes the spread of
bacterial, viral and protozoan disease.

Generally, contamination results due to the following reasons:

1. Washing
2. Drinking
3. In the preparation of food
4. Consumption of the infected food.
The most common disease caused by bad water is diarrhea. Other diseases include cholera,
typhoid, hepatitis A, polio, filariasis, amoebiasis.

According to a report by UNICEF and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), due to the
deficiency of water supply and pepper sanitation, 45% of kids in India are hindered and 6
Lakhs youngsters under the age of five die every year. It is estimated that around 37.7
million Indians are influenced by water-borne sicknesses every year; 73 million working
days are lost because of water-borne diseases every year.

According to reports, 33% of all deaths of youngsters under the age of 5 years in India are
because of diarrhea and pneumonia. A lot more kids who survive, have a weak immune
system, as a result of diarrhea, pneumonia, intestinal sickness, and worm invasions, and
become underweight and malnourished, which severely affects their learning capacity for
the rest of their lives.

The Central Pollution Control Board’s investigation of water quality observing outcomes
from 1995 to 2009 demonstrates microbial defilement as the overwhelming type of
contamination in surface water bodies in India. It was seen that about 64% of the surface
perceptions had biochemical oxygen request (BOD) under 3 mg/l, 19% between 3-6 mg/l
and 17% over 6 mg/l (the dimension of BOD in water, the proportion of natural
contamination, ought not to surpass 3mg/l). The reason for this is the municipal authorities
are not able to treat the increasing load of the municipal sewage; as a result, it ends up
contaminating the water bodies. The accepting water bodies may themselves not have
satisfactory water accessible for contamination.

The Numerous stretches of significant waterways going through modern towns and urban
communities are fundamentally contaminated. In the blessed city of Haridwar, the Ganges
has been appearing stressing pattern of expanding BOD esteems from around 2 mg/l in
2002 to practically 5.5 mg/l in 2008. The major pathogenic creatures in charge of
waterborne ailments in India are microorganisms (E. coli, Shigella, V cholera), infections
(Hepatitis A, Polio Virus, Rota Virus) and parasites (E. histolytica, Giardia). Poor waste
transfer offices likewise add to contamination of water bodies by methods for draining.
