Intro:

There are man brave men and women fighting wars all around the world. The photo taken at the
end of the battle in Iwo Jima presents many feelings towards the american culture today. The
photo presents a form of marxism and introduces a color psychology being the true colors ever
man and women see when looking at the picture of the brave men signaling they have won.

Summary:
During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd
Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s
highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis
Lowery was with them and recorded the event. Americans fighting for control of Suribachi’s
slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest
with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the
way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a
motion-picture cameraman.

Analyze: Marxism
Patriotism is usually understood as ones love for the country. With the help of Marx's theories of
the state and of alienation, we explore what is meant by love and country in this definition. A
patriotic symbols, particularly the flag as the Government of the illusory community is able to
redirect these sentiments into support for its political agenda. Patriotism is alway appealed to
photos with the american flag as marxism has always gave that appeal to power. In The marxism
reading its presented that karl marx writes that power “creates a world after its own image”
(Marx 772). As the Image of the men lifting the flag after a bloody battle creating a world in a
simple image.Anytime the Flag is lifted in a game or presented a sign of respect is shown and the
national anthem is presented as well, showing the effect the flag has made on a country and the
many brave men and women who fought and continuing fighting for it.

Analyze 2: Color Psychology

As the photo taken itself does not have any color as it was taken in black and white however, the
meaning behind the photo is colorful enough for anyone to understand. Many already know the
color of the american flag and what it stands for the red meaning hardiness & valour, the white
meaning purity and innocence, and the blue signifying vigilance. In Soma Kalia’s Colour and its
effects in interior environment: a review states that “Some colour responses are temporary and
others may last for a long period of time” (Kalia 2). As the american flag's colors are represented
and will never be forgotten showing respect to those who have given their life for it.

Evaluation:
It might be hard today to comprehend how a single image can become iconic, exposed as we are
to streams of photographs and videos every day from our news and social media feeds. The
original photo of the aftermath of iwo jima present the true heroism of the marine troops
signaling a victory of a cold war. The photograph has shaped many parts of the country today
and still presents itself as one of only few successful american triumphs.
