BRIEF DISCUSSION OF PIOUS AND IMPIOUS IN EUTHYPHRO: AN

ALTERNATIVE DIALOGUE.

Proposal: The idea in this alternative fragment, is to think of a passage in the

dialogue between Socrates and Euthyphro regarding the piety from a different
perspective, that is, considering that Euthyphro admit the idea that what is
pious is pious because it is loved by gods, instead of the original sequence, in
which we have the opposite reasoning.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soc => Tell me Euthyphro: Is the pious or holy beloved by the gods because it
is holy, or holy because it is beloved of the gods?

Euth => It is holy because it is beloved of the gods.

Soc => It is an interesting point of view dear Euthyphro, but I think we will have
problems if we think that way.

Euth => Why?

Soc => Can the same thing be loved by all the gods?

Euth => I do not understand your meaning, Socrates.

Soc => Allow me make things a little clearer: All things considered pious to a
god, will also be considered in the same way by the other gods? Or, in other
words, there is consensus among the gods?

Euth => I think not.

Soc => So we have what can be loved by one, can not be loved by others. Do
you agree?

Euth => I agree.

Soc => We realize, in this case, we should then try the other way, that is, what
is pious loved by the gods because it is pious, not the opposite.

Euth => I do not yet clearly understand, Socrates.

Soc => See, my dear Euthyphro, if we say that the gods love something that is
pious because it is pious, that is, considering that there is no discussion about
its nature, we can assume then that all the gods would love this something by
its nature itself, then, there would be consensus and then arrive at a better
conclusion.

Euth => Now I understand you better.

Soc => So, to reorganize the thinking and not lose focus of our investigation, I
ask you again: Is the pious or holy beloved by the gods because it is holy, or
holy because it is beloved of the gods?

Euth => It is holy because it is pious.

Conclusion: In a very simple way in terms of argument, "our Socrates" allows

Euthyphro realize that their reasoning would be inconsistent to admit the
proposal that the pious is pious because it is loved by the gods, pointing out
that in this case, the problem of argument lies in the fact the lack of consensus
among the gods on what is pious and what is not, giving rise to many
contradictions.
