EXAM CMtNWT IMPROVISATION ENSEMBLE 1st YEAR

1) Give 3 different combinations of Laghu, Drutam and Anudrutam for Tala 11 and for Tala 7.

2) Construct a phrase in Khanda that would fit into the internal structure of Tala 9 (L5 D D)

3) Write a phrase in chatusra jathi 5 using the Gati Bhedam concept and notation (20 beats).

4) Write a 2-layered sequence of polypulses, using Gati bhedam in one layer and regular
phrasing in the other layer. Make sure that there is a clear feeling of ‘meeting and departure’,
every 3, 4, 5 or 7 beats, depending on the chosen jathi for the gati bhedam layer

5) Write a rhythmical phrase on a jathi bhedam sequence in chatusra in 2 cycles of Tala 7.

Develop it by taking it into Tisra and complete the cycles with a short mukthay.

6) Write a phrase with a systematic number of notes per cell on the previous Jathi bhedam
sequence.

7) Write a structural Mukthay in one cycle of Tala 10. Create an internal jathi bhedam for the
pala, write a phrase on it and use 2 different sets of accents that would fit with the pala.

8) Develop the previous mukthay by taking it into Tisra (2nd speed) and add a short mukthay at
the end.

9) Specify the parameters used in the 'Graphic Densities Chart' and give a brief explanation of
each one of them.

Every question gives one point, except for question 4 that will be graded with 2 points.
