TED-TALK ANALYSIS
WHY IT'S OKAY TO BE FAT
GOLDA PORETSKY (13 MINS & 45 SECONDS)

The topic that I chose is about “Why It’s Okay to be Fat” by Golda
Poretsky. Golda made mention about her struggles with weight and
body before. She went on her first diet at age 4 when kids in nursery
school started calling her fat. She tried too many types of diet because
when she go on a diet and it doesn’t work, she goes into another diet.
So, for the next 24 years, after trying every diet that she could go
through, she realized that she could make a different choice —
accepting her body and treating it well.

According to her, dieting is good but if dieting doesn’t work, you are
probably thinking about the bad things about being fat such as the
obesity and the dangers of fat. Fat is not dangerous the way you think
it is. And lastly, being fat and thin don’t matter too much, maybe they
don’t really matter as much as how we think they do as long as we are
healthy.

I also learned from her this new paradigm which is “Health at Every
Size” that she also made mention about. And it has 3 principles which
are — eating with variety of healthy foods and eating food which you
wanted to eat. The second one is, finding the body movement that is
appropriate to your body. And lastly, accepting your body and
understanding that there is a beautiful diversity of bodies in the world
and always remember that your body fits right in there.
With the help of this speech/topic, I have realized that your body size
does not make you less of a person. Every individual is beautiful
whether he/she is thin or fat. Let us all learn how to love our body and
let go of those judgements that people throw to you, and by this, we
can live a better life.
