Why School Should Be Shorter
Imagine sitting in a class, still halfasleep and not processing a thing. You woke up very
early to go to school and you are still tired. If school started later, you would have probably
been able to pay attention. Attention is needed for school, but if one is tired, that can be mission
impossible. We should have shorter school days because it gives more free time before, during,
and after school, decreases stress and improves class structure, productivity, and time
management skills.
Thus, many students struggle to get out of bed because they are dreading the boring, long
classes and stress. This gives a rough start to teens’ mornings. Schools need to start later in the
morning in order for kids to pay more attention. Since school is around 7 to 8 hours long, kids
also need to take breaks during school time. Finnish schools take 15minute breaks per each
45minuteclass, yet they score 17.5% higher points than the U.S., 66% go on to higher
education and even Finland has the highest rate of the European Union. Yet Finland spends less
than 30% than The United States on students. Especially for teenagers, break time is needed, to
set them in a good mood, clear their minds, and get their energy back.
After that, according to the Washington Post , the brain more or less falls asleep in an
estimated 20 minutes because of the lack of oxygen and glucose. The notes you just took
haven’t been processed because, in other words, your brain has shut off. Because you can’t
learn, you can start stressing about tests. The 29th Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm
Turnbull, said he was not stressed at all for his exams, yet his daughter Daisy Turnbull was very

stressed about her exams, the stress for exams is slowly increasing in Australia as is the high
school drop out rate, which is now 29%. Trying to have all work finished and be financially
successful in the future is stressful, and doing too much work or school one day is a primary
source of stress, dropouts, and no relaxation.
Wouldn't you just like to get school over with and finish every schoolday faster and more
productive? Less than 2% of students say that they always enjoy school, so kids would clearly
be happier if their school hours were shorter. Schortening school times makes kids more
productive. Imagine having such high time management skills that it takes you less time to
finish work, stress starts decreasing and you can have more free time. Even teachers should
make sure that they are good at time management. If classes were shorter teachers could add
more structure to their lessons. Kids would learn the same amount and be more organized.
It sounds nice and relaxing to have a long class and no rush, right? You wouldn’t have to
worry about finishing your work, there is enough time. Actually, you would. Letting class be
free sounds relaxed, but will also start procrastination. Especially with kids, classes should be
structured, or they will start goofing around. With shorter classes, teachers and students have a
time constraint, so the classes get more structured and succesful.
Anxiety, stress, and dropout rates are slowly increasing. Decreases could be possible.
What is possible is making schooltime shorter, and it would already help significantly. Kids
need to learn how to take care of themselves, but pressure is overwhelming and not letting them
to. Let’s wake up by the alarm, eager to go to school.
